Say, do any of you guys write Congress about any of this stuff, or
any-other thing really. (please say yes)
'Cuz this is all just pissing in the wind if you don't. So, if you
don't, please start, and don't stop until all this ***** is fixed.
(thank you very much)

I'm not that good at writing letters to politicians, but
I've signed tons of petitions over the last few years,
and I've gone to Washington, D.C. for a few marches.
And, I donate a little money when I can. Others in
alt.atheism have shown wonderful letters that they've
written to various politicians and newspapers. When
I retire next year, I plan to do more.Believe me, it isn't
all talk in alt.atheism.

I used to write my congressmen. But they would always send me a form
letter response of how they're going to do as they damn well please.
Needless to say, I won't be voting to reelect them, but I'm a bit
disillusioned with the idea of writing them.

Had a co-worker once who worked in a congressman's office.
He said that the letter-writers and phone callers had one
thing in common: the congressman didn't give a damn
about them. You see, the congressman figured that those
who were happy with him voted him in, so those calling to
complain were almost certainly those who hadn't voted
for him and were unlikely to do so in the future. He had
staffers that unruffled them, sent them bedbug letters,
that kind of thing, and said staffers knew better than
to ever let a letter-writer or phone-caller actually bother
the congressman.

I suspected the reasoning was that or something similar.
It'd be interesting to see how well a politician could do by promising
to listen to constituents. Alas, that doesn't quite have the ring to it
as "protect the sanctity of marriage".

That's probably one of the most repeated and most generic
of all campaign promises.

Gah. I think it's high time the government got out
of the marriage business altogether. Replace the
government side with contracts, mainly concerned
with responsibility for children and disposition of
estates, and tell the churches in no uncertain terms
that otherwise anything goes.

I haven't heard that one. But then this is the first cycle of elections
that I'm eligible to vote in, so it's not surprising that I've mostly
heard blathering on more high profile topics.

The more local the election, the more this particular note is
sounded. You'll hear it all the way up to presidential races.

Actually I wrote all the individuals on the state's judicial comittee
and used the Reich Wing's own 'family values' words against them. The
avenue I took was inadvertant ramifications and reprecussions. One
state rep hand wrote a note back indicating he'd block the bill from
leaving committee, and he did.
The particular sponsor of the legislation (catholic fundy) scrambled to
recover but wasn't able to. :D [/cue Muttley laugh]

Don't you love those little "Like you, I'm concerned..." form letters that
assume you agree with the position they've taken, utterly regardless of
what you actually wrote?
They're not even trying anymore. They should just be honest and have a
form letter that says "To have your opinion register, include a check..."
