For children, a microscope can provide a magical moment:
eye-to-eyelash contact with a bug.
My (currently estranged) GF's kids loved to look at bugs and things under my
stereo microscope. They'd spend hours looking under rocks in the flower
bed, poking through leaf litter looking for pill bugs or anything that
moved, and plucking leaves, flowers and blades of grass to look at.
