Man dies in police shootout; fatal shot unknown

A Bettendorf man was killed during a shooting with
police, but it was unclear whether he was shot by
police or committed suicide, authorities said. The
incident began after police received a call about
a suicidal person, Police Chief Phil Redington said.
There was a short chase involving two police cars
and a van. Redington said the driver of the van stopped
on a city street, then got out of the vehicle. The man
was armed with a gun, he said. One of the officers
fired two shots, Redington said. The chief said it was
unclear whether the officer's bullet struck the man or
whether the man shot himself. No officers were hurt.
Police would not release the name of the dead man
or the officer who fired the shots. The officer was
placed on administrative leave, Redington said.
