CLEVELAND -- A self-confessed pedophile who home-schooled children in
his Rocky River home pleaded guilty Monday to all 74 counts against
him.
Jury selection for 34-year-old Philip Distasio's trial was to begin on
Monday. Instead, the man accused of raping nine autistic boys pleaded
guilty to dozens of charges, including rape, kidnapping, gross sexual
imposition, and pandering obscenity involving a minor.
Distasio, who was arrested last September, said that molesting
children is a part of his religion, and that the children were willing
partners.
He told a judge that his apartment was a religious sanctuary where
smoking marijuana and having sex with children are sacred rituals
protected by civil rights laws.
He told the judge, "I'm a pedophile. I've been a pedophile for 20
years. The only reason I'm charged with rape is that no one believes a
child can consent to sex. The role of my ministry is to get these
cases out of the courtrooms."
Distasio is set to be sentenced on Oct. 16. He could face life in
prison.
