Man Shot and Killed

A man who jumped headfirst through the window of a
local dry cleaning business was shot and killed by a
police officer after he armed himself with scissors and
charged at the officer, authorities said. Witnesses said
Robert Hodell, 59, of Galloway Township was acting
broke the window. The business at the Pomona Mart
mall was closed at the time and no one was inside, but
about 10 people - including some young children - were
in a coin-operated laundry next door when the incident
occurred.
One witness, Robert LaSasso Jr., told The Press of
Atlantic City that Hodell drove up to the business and
then jumped out of his car, shouting incoherently before
diving through window. Once inside the business, Hodell
began breaking things as a security alarm began to
sound, and he then tried to pull the alarm box out of the
wall before continuing his rampage.
Meanwhile, LaSasso had called 911 and was trying to
help people evacuate the coin-operated laundry when
Galloway Township Police Cpl. Sean Hackney, a 12-year
veteran of the force, arrived on the scene and found
Hodell brandishing the scissors, Atlantic County Prosecutor
Jeffrey S. Blitz said. Hodell then charged at Hackney,
who fired several shots at him as several other officers
began arriving at the scene, witnesses said. The mall's
parking lot area was then quickly cordoned off and
officers slowly approached the dry cleaning business,
uncertain of Hodell's condition and whether he had
any other weapons. However, they soon saw him
lying on the floor and determined that he was dead,
apparently from his wounds. However, authorities
said an autopsy would be performed sometime this
week.
The prosecutor's office will review the incident, which
is normal procedure for a police involved shooting,
but officials said it appears that Hackney acted properly
