The Godfather revealed;
*Marijuana top US cash crop, policy analyst says*
By David Alexander
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. growers produce nearly $35 billion
(18 billion pounds) worth of marijuana annually, making the illegal drug
the country's largest cash crop, bigger than corn and wheat combined,
an advocate of medical marijuana use said in a study released on Monday.
The report, conducted by Jon Gettman, a public policy analyst and
former
head of the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws, also
concluded that five U.S. states produce more than $1 billion worth of
marijuana
apiece: California, Tennessee, Kentucky, Hawaii and Washington.
California's production alone was about $13.8 billion, according to
Gettman,
who waged an unsuccessful six-year legal battle to force the government to
remove marijuana from a list of drugs deemed to have no medical value.
Tom Riley, a spokesman for the U.S. Office of National Drug Control
Policy,
said he could not confirm the report's conclusions on the size of the
country's
marijuana crop. But he said the government estimated overall U.S.
illegal drug
use at $200 billion annually.

Someone would loose lots of money, if marijuana growing was allowed
by individual "Life, Liberty and Pursuit of Happiness" American
citizens. 8-)

I haven't been able to find the exact quote, but Bill Maher said on his
show a couple of months ago something to the effect of, "You know how
you'll know the government is actually serious about winning the war on
terror? When they give up the war on drugs."
The government would have us believe that by buying drugs you support
international terrorism. Supposing for a moment it's true, the obvious
solution is to legalize it, thus slashing into the profitability of the
illegal trade. I wouldn't support legalizing everything -- I'd leave
crystal meth out -- but certainly marijuana should be 100% legal. The
"drug czar" says the total U.S. drug consumption is $200 billion a
year; think of the tax revenue!

the drug lords would kill anyone who ever tried to actually leglize it.
and the crystal meth scourge is vastly overstated.
back in the 70s speed was as prevelent as cocaine is today. the thing with
spped is its only fun for a while and you don't get addicted to it like one
does to cigarettes or heroin nor does it maintain its allure like cocaine,
eventually it wears on you and people quit.
but it makes a nice bugaboo to harp on and keep the funds flowing.
nobody wants drugs legalized , not the sellers who make money, not the
police who have built an empire chasing after them, not the south american
countries who need that income, nor the users, taxes would just cause the
prices to rise.
and that $200 billion is a cash business. there is too much at stake for
too many people for legalization to ever happen.

You don't know what you're talking about.

Utter *****. Crystal meth is highly addictive.
but it makes a nice bugaboo to harp on and keep the funds flowing.

american countries who need that income, nor the users, taxes would

But the price would come down more than the taxes would go up, and
there's that little added bonus of not having to worry about going to
prison.

Meth is probably overstated, but it is a real threat. I've seen the effects
of it, and it's not pretty. That being said, I think all drugs should be
legalized, even meth.

Yup. A friend told me about some incredibly simple method to make
crystal meth the other day...I'm no chemist, and I have no interest in
making the stuff, but it doesn't seem like one needs much brain power
to be able to make the *****.
But all drugs should be legalized.
