Marriage |
Would you ever date/marry a christan? I wouldn't but I'm just seeing if
for some reason anyone would.

I married a xtian woman. And a Southern Baptist to boot.
She believes and all that, but she doesn't go to church or really practice
the faith much. If we ever have kids, she wants to take them to church for
some reason. I agreed that she can do that since she feels strongly about
it, but only on every other Sunday. I stipulated that I would be free to do
fun stuff w/ the kid(s) on the other Sundays.
She'll take 'em to church, and I'll take 'em to the bar in the morning
during NFL season.

I have in the past. One guy broke up with me, the excuse being "I'm not
right with the lord". Thought that was pretty funny.
Another I dropped quicker than a hot potato when he told me he belonged to
"The Crossroads Church of Christ". Back when I was in college in Florida,
that particular church was on the verge of becoming a dangerous cult. When I
asked him if he would insist on his children being raised in that religion,
he said "Absolutely". I said "Good bye". He was more than a little weird
anyway.

Have been married to one for almost 24 years now.
Great lady too.

Back when I was single, I dated *people* Some of them were
Christians. I never prejudged a person's suitability as a date based
on their religion. If we knew each, seemed to get along well, and at
lkeast some level of mutual attraction (that last was always the
hardests to judge for me) I'd ask them out.
I did have one woman tell me that she couldn't date me because of her
religion. Very honest about it, and we remain good friends to this
day.

Well, it depends what kind of christian: taliban, definitely not.
Otherwise, I couldn't care less what my girlfriend believes in. There
are plenty of cool Christians, Jews or Muslims who keep their
religions for themselves. Why would I bother?
It's like asking if I'd go out with a woman who likes C=E9line Dion. If
she doesn't force me to listen to her, who cares.

Now come on, liking Celine Dion would be a lot more serious.

While doing so would fall under the heading of "just asking
for it", note that falling in love is pretty much the definition
of irrational behavior.

Tricky.
She would have to have a lot of things going for her - and she would
have to love me in "spite" of my atheism.
I think eventually it would be a problem - she would probably thinking
she could "change" me and then when it didnt happen...
The guy I share an office with is a skeptic like me - he is married to
a catholic.
Being a Catholic she believes in the sanctity of marriage - she always
assumed my friend would come around to the churches way of thinking.
I am sure there are plenty of "mixed" couples that make it work - but
it will always be an irritant between them.
Cheers, Mark.

I've had the same experience...minus the religion fucking the head up
thing.
My wife is a Catholic - not a hard-core, church every Sunday,
barbarically eating the symbolic body of a dirty hippy Catholic, but
nonetheless faithful. When our daughter arrived five weeks ago, minor
problems began to sprout - namely, her desire to baptize our little
girl.
I'm relatively soft on the issue, and will probably let it happen.
We'll never be going to church, so I don't have to fear
indoctrination, and it will keep my wife happy, which will keep me
happy. Besides, I was baptized and went to catholic school until grade
10, and I turned out nice and Atheist. :-)
Oh, the Christian girls bring back some great University memories.
About 10 minutes up the road from my rural U, there was a large
Christian church - scary Christian, with a bus/black tinted windows
and the words "soldiers for Christ" on the side. A few of the women
who went there would stop by and watch our rugby and soccer games.
Once they started to come to the parties afterwards...WOW.

I don't think I would be attracted to a man who believed in the
supernatural. It's just too weird. I would wonder about the
intelligence of someone who believes in ghosts, gods or anything for
which there was no proof.

Love is where you find it. I married a Jew. She still likes to celebrate
the High Holidays, but she's gotten quite light-hearted now when I poke fun
at the Christians. She's given up on indoctrinating the kids now. Our
oldest is almost 15. Out of danger, I'd say.

I know that feeling...I married a South Dakota farmer's daughter who was
baptized in the Lutheran church, and about the only time she visits it when
we're up that way is when there's a Sunday dinner. (The last time she
attended a church function was when we were up there for her father's funeral
in the winter of 1991.)
