Object: Mars and "faith based initiatives": a prediction
Last night, while watching FOX News the bimbo in front of the camera
said something to the effect of "Lay people can't see what the
scientists are seeing in these pictures, but they are from Mars and that
must be exciting for them."
Trust me, the NASA people weren't seeing much more than "lay people."
It was all about success, about making it work, about seeing Mars though
a near-real-time camera and enjoying a decade of work to make it happen.
I have to admit that $820 million is well-spent so far; that's about
half of what _The Lord of the Rings_ cost and this is much more
interesting-- it's at least real.
But as I lay dozing off to sleep afterwards, it hit me. Bimbo was
laying down a party line.
I predict, as the Mars mission proceeds, that we will start to hear from
factions the following: "All that taxpayer money has gone to provide
those geeks with their thrills, but there's no discernable payoff for
sending robots to Mars now, is there? Why can scientists get taxpayer
cash to perform their arcane rituals, which are of no benefit to anyone
but the scientists, while faith-based charities have to struggle without
the government's help? After all, we know they're of benefit to more
than just themselves."
Maybe I'm just excessively cynical these days.

I'm worried that at some point in the future all government funded
scientific research will be banned except for that which is supposed
to support creationism and the bible.

Maybe I'm just excessively cynical these days.

Not any more than I am.

I think your cynicisms are excessive. Most Christians I know are very
supportive of the space program.

My cynicism was not so much directed at xtians in general as at the
current administration.

But they aren't the ones holding public office.

Or maybe you just understand the situation too well. The public is
supposed to be lulled by the pap, we're not supposed to think about
it.
