What's the scientific explanation behind dreams, de ja vu,
premonitions, and prayer?
The physical brain.
Tada!
That doesn't explain anything. Your "explanation" is as silly as me
asking you, What is the explanation behind calculus, and you
answering, "classroom."
You merely described the vehicle in which these events are perceived,
processed, and then acknowledged. Did you not understand the question?
Here, I'll rephrase it.
What are dreams? Why do we have them?
What is de ja vu? Why do we experience it?
What are premonitions? Why do we have them?
What is prayer? Why does it work?
Ever seen anyone dreaming or experiencing deja vu or
praying who didn't have a human body and brain?
See how easy that is?
Again, you haven't explained anything. You merely described the
vehicle in which these events are perceived, processed, and then
acknowledged. Did you not understand the question?
Here, I'll rephrase it.
What are dreams? Why do we have them?
What is de ja vu? Why do we experience it?
What are premonitions? Why do we have them?
What is prayer? Why does it work?
You want an explanation for angels, too?
Why?!? You couldn't even answer my first question!!
(Innocent Question: How come people like you never really pay
attention to what's being asked, or said - Yet are quick to ridicule
what you coudn't grasp??)

You asking me that requires you to use your brain.
One day, maybe you'll realize that our brains contain everything
that we are. All our memories, all our emotions, dreams, and anything
else that you can imagine, using your brain.

What is prayer?
A method by which man atones with his inner conscience; sets his feelings
straight. In other words, it's talking to yourself.
Why does it work?
What makes you think it does? Beyond self-importance, prayer is nothing
but mental masturbation.
Besides, according to Christian doctrine, the Almighty has an Almighty
Plan. He's spent millions and billions of years honing this plan, then
several thousand years ago he put it in action. Since he is omniscient,
nothing strays from this plan. Yet we have prayer.
What makes a Christian think his prayer would sway the god from his
Almighty Plan?

I'm not a psychologist, so I don't go there. Dreams are dreams. It's
just the subconscious mind having its day in the sun. Instead of making
up stories about what causes them, I just lay back and enjoy them. I do
like making observations, though.
I quit smoking a few years ago. The first two months of my ordeal was
spent under the influence of the Nicoderm Patch. Yes, it worked for me,
as I am now a comfortable non-smoker - as if I had never started,
discounting the damage I've done to my lungs. Well, anyway, one of the
side effects of mainlining nicotine via the Patch is dreams. VIVID
dreams. Very convincing in the reality department. Even though when
you wake up (and you can remember each and every one of them upon
waking) they seem ridiculous, you retain their earthshaking profundity
for most of the morning. Which was why I cold-turkeyed the Patch after
a few months and fought the nicotine withdrawl with my own will-power.
The dreams were not nightmares. They just seemed way more real than the
average dream. Drugs like nicotine act on the functionality of the
brain. Which proves to me, anyway, that dreams are a subfunction of the
brain's function of subconscious. Nothing more.
What makes a Christian think his prayer would sway the god from his
Almighty Plan?
What Christians say is irrelevant, and not part of the question.
Christians make up a major portion of my country's population, the USA.
Do you want to break the news to them?
In going over NG's post, I don't see any reference to religion.
However, the fact that she tends to start a new thread with each reply
makes it difficult to grasp the context, so one is left only with the
choice of newsgroups to which the new thread is crossposted to guess the
nature of the post.
Sorry, my bad.

You just *did* make up a story about what causes dreams - the "subconscious

Ah, the subconscious - that's just some imaginary thing invented by some
psychologists...
Seriously, I think the idea of the subconscious is about as plausible as the
idea of God - and the proof of its existence as difficult (impossible,
actually).

Vic is lying. Everyone has had a premonition, a gut feeling, an intuition
that they don't know where it came from. He just can't call it that because
that would make him suspect to his atheist pals.
Meanwhile the whole damned alt.atheism is just one hot bed of anti-Christian
sentiment. I never here them mention Jains or Sufis or native American
Church goers as being full of ***** like all Christians are.
So Vic can't think outside the "Christian God" box. To bad, because God
lives outside that box.

What makes you think God has a "plan?"
Maybe His plan is to not make any definite plans. Wouldn't that make a
Universe that much more fun!?
How would an atheist who does not believe in prayer convince theists who do
believe in it that his opinion counts for anything? I'm sure you don't know
the first thing about God. You say the Wise man (I am taking it that this is
"you" in your silly world view) tells the whole world there is no God. Now
that is probably the most unwise thing I've ever heard. There are places
where you can get killed for being that stupid. But since you are the wise
man who believes in no God. Then it must logically follow that you could not
know anything about a God which does not exist. Therefore your opinion is a
fantasy.
