I accidentally marked the two posts as read and haven't a clue how to

I would like to help, but I need at least the title of the thread that
contains the posts in question.
What newsreader do you use?
Most of them allow you to review "read" messages if you massage them
properly.
Are you referring to the divorce-rates statistics?

Xnews Statistics - yes. A very kind person gave me a google site to
search; I have my browser there and am going to do a search for
Civility. Then I am going to add the main site to my "favorites". I
knew there had to be a place I could search - I didn't know where.
Then I have to figure out how to tell my ng reader NOT to keep showing
me all the headers I've already read and don't want to see. So much to
learn; so little time.

Easier way, depending on your browser [use Opera myself] you may be able
to get a RSS feed which allows you to read at your leisure. Then you know
which authors/messages to look for when its news time,
As to your news client, X-news can be a bit much for some, but there is a
wide selection of free news readers out there, & you can find some at
http://nonags,com
I use dialog as well as MR2 [commercial & not that good but good at what I
want], the dialog appears to be an agent clone with a great plus, scoring
as well as multiple news feeds if you want.
Had no problems with either as long as the system is stable.
If you are really adventurous, try setting up a nntp server, it makes life
so much easier. Its amazing what or who you can avoid seeing if you don't
want to. It uses score files that allow it to search thje body of the
message as well.
Example of people that I do not see [they never make it to the screen].
[alt.atheism]
?=-200 body
{(OK@|bibon|reuben|bastasch8647|hoyme|hasatan|cipolitti:mccoy|brianf88|shem|killgod|wmech|tuco|rockboy|conrad|Ejercito|john.|html|rbwinn|kope2|bashar|nowhere1|tliscomb|boggs|geloso|twonky|Karczewski|ananias|ch.mon|Menezes|Kadaitcha|pastorfrank|jes|dford|assaf|tcross|Wentzky|Johnny|someone4|riol|codebreaker|ef_|lorr|mikeburt|anonymous|ya'betz|chung|(bob)|bam|lorr|yjk|hitler|duke|iknowhim|winter|I.B.|virgil|hvac|krp|nicklas|xl5|fstone|eickleberry|DCI|snex|gmearnest|liken|mga|drwood|jyoung|boek|pearse|gandalf|(scratch))}
I need to update that file, but manana[sp? its been centuries since I was
near that border] is soon enough.
Then I have to figure out how to tell my ng reader NOT to keep showing me
all the headers I've already read and don't want to see. So much to
learn; so little time.
That should be in one of the settings menues, or you can delete the file
by pressing delete. In x-news, that marks the message with a big red x.

newsgroup, & seldom disappointed due to an unanswered question.
Some beliefs are like walled gardens. They leave us feeling especially
privileged.
Other beliefs are expansive . . . they open up the world.
Some beliefs are like shadows, clouding our days with fear.
Other beliefs are like sunshine, blessing all beings with warmth and
trust.
IT MATTERS WHAT WE BELIEVE.
Some beliefs are divisive. They tear our communities apart.
Other beliefs connect us. Differences give texture to community. Some
beliefs are like binders, shutting our eyes to our power to make choices.
Other beliefs are like gateways, opening the world for our minds to
explore..
IT MATTERS WHAT WE BELIEVE
Some beliefs separate the world into US and THEM.
Some beliefs set up boundaries of fear.
Some beliefs encourage us to lock our hearts even tighter than our doors.
Some beliefs have the power to shred the fabric of the world.
IT MATTERS WHAT WE BELIEVE.

Xnews. I have managed to get to the google groups and post (I hope) a
reply to Al. Then I managed to convince Xnews not to show me the read
headers. I am taking a break for coffee, coffe, coffee, ... then will
see what you had to say about the statistics.

It was so close to nothing as may well thoroughly disappoint you.

I was not able to divine your potential reticence on the matter, so
proffered a helping hand, for what it may have been worth.
I hope that your sense of independence took no umbrage at the gesture.
