Next week sees the annual meeting of the British Association for the
Advancement of Science in Sheffield. Born in the heyday of progressive
Victorian optimism, this peripatetic institution seems just as much at
home in today's pessimistic millennial mood. It still draws the curious
public in droves to see and question these evil but fascinating
creatures called scientists who plot the destruction of the world.
