Maybe atheism may not be for you after all |
For those die-hard Christians out there...
Face it, you're not really that smart, and to be honest, maybe a simplistic
fantasy world, with a God-Creator and a Young Earth, Noah's great big fun
boat, a loving yet wrathful God who hates men who have sex with other men et
cetera et cetera.
Your brains may not be able to cope with reality, the cold hard truth. You
can't expect a pocket calculator to play a PS3 game. Perhaps the real world
frightens you and you need that cocoon of fantasy to go on living life. To
be honest, it is a big world full of numbers, words, facts and opinions, you
don't want to get overloaded with it all.
Maybe atheism may not be for you. Perhaps it is only for the intelligent,
those with that little bit extra up there to understand the big big world.
But just understand this. We're smarter. This explains the difficulty you
seem to be having with trying to convert us. Please bear this in mind.

REPLY: Why do u suppose we are trying 'to convert you' Luke ? Its
because we are offering you the truth . Atheism is not a smart mans
philosophy....it is a philosophy of trying to find justification to

become silly and pretending IE: Having to force oneself to think

I'll recycle a previous analogy for you. If we are taught from an early age
that 2+2=5, then we are led to believe that 2+2=5. Our parents also believe
it, the random guy on the street believes it. Everyone in school believes
it. On sunday, you go to church to learn more about 2+2=5.
The stupid kid accepts it, he doesn't want to be singled out, but doesn't
question 2+2=5. As long as he fits in, he feels safe. The smart kid,
however, asks more questions. She puts the philosophy to the test, putting
together two pairs of buttons, to make four buttons. She then thinks...
"2+2=4"?
She asks dad to have a look. They have an argument. She says there is four
buttons, he shouts at her five and that she shouldn't blaspheme. She's sent
to bed. She still can't help but question, how can there be five buttons
when there are only four?
Where does the extra button come from?
She asks mom. She's a bit more sympathetic. She tells her daughter that no
one should count the buttons, just have faith in Five, that is all that you
need.
She looks in the Bible. Now, this is fantasy because I'm creating a new
book, but at least it fits in with everything else in there.
Roger 1:5
1 And the LORD said to Quentin, "Thou dost not trust in me and I shall
quench the famine in thy people. Thy stomachs will now be filled with bread,
but I dost grant thee a further gift. Raise out thy palms unto me."
2 And Quentin didst raise his palms and the LORD did grant him a gift. And
the LORD said, "Look upon my gift with your eyes."
3 And Quentin saw in his right palm two beans. And in his left palm two
beans. The LORD said, "Thou now hast five beans so that you may planteth
them and may the fruit be plentiful."
4 Quentin did thank for the gift, but didst counteth them in his hand and
questionedeth the number of beans.
5 The LORD said, "I have granteth thou a gifteth of five beanseth and five
thou have. Thou must have faitheth in five. Go and tendeth to your beans.
Five thou wilt have."
6 And Quentin didst return to his people and the people looked upon the
beans. The leader did shout that Quentin did bring forth four beans, but
Quentin told him he didst have five.
7 And Quentin said, "I will planteth the beans. I will tendeth to them and
the parasites will be smote, for these are the beans of the LORD."
8 The beans were planted and watered. Quentin didst build a trellis for the
beans to growest upwards on towardest the light of the sun.
9 On the third day, Quentin did inspect upon the beans and didst count the
sprouted plants before the trellis.
10 Quentin didst count five sprouts upon the ground. Quentin said, "O LORD,
I am grateful for thy gift, may thy five sprouts groweth tall and may they
be bountiful on the earth."
11 Quentin showed the sprouts to the village who acknowledgedeth the mighty
gift of the LORD. But the leader didst move forward to the sprouts.
12 The leader said, "Five doth I count from four beans. Thou art a man of
trickery. Thou shalt not dissuade the village from me."
13 And Quentin said, "Thou art mockingeth a miracle of the LORD. If it so
dost pleaseth thou, then thou shalt plucketh the fifth sprout from the earth
and cast it upon the rock and sever the root from the shaft, so that it may
die. So that it may pleaseth you in being four sprouts."
14 And the leader bent down and didst destroy the sprout.
15 The LORD spake to the leader, "Thou hast destroyeth my gift. Now it shalt
wilteth and die and never beareth seed. Thou are ungrateful unto Me."
16 And the leader didst feel a pain in his groin and his testicles didst
fall upon the ground.
17 And the LORD said, "I haveth destroyed your seed for your wickedness."
18 The leader raised a fist to the LORD and was turned into a pool of
vinegar.
19 The LORD said, "Thou hadst faith in Five and now thou shalt lead your
people. Tend to your lands so that they mayst bear bountiful fruit for your
stomachs."
20 And Quentin and the people didst bear bounty from the earth.
Now the dumb just accept what they are told, by people they come to trust
from an early age. The smart think about a twin embryo in one bean and other
theories.
It sorts out the smart Fourists from the stupid Fiveists, but they didn't
necessarily have to read from the Book of Roger to work out that 2+2=4,
always has been and always will.
But in this world, there will be masses of books written to debate it. Yes,
books upon books on why 2+2=5.
I could go on, but I'd like more people to contribute to the Book of Roger.
Its so easy to make up.

Chapter 2
1 In the fifth day after the LORD had giveth the beans to Quentin the sun
didst shine brilliantly and the beans groweth fast.
2 Now it was the custom to give a fifth part of thine produce to the temple
in order that the Elders could drink ale every day and live in luxury.
3 For the LORD had earlier decreed in the Doorwood Forest that a fifth part
shall be taken from those who farm and shall be given to the temple.
4 On the sixth day Quentin did harvest the beans and he did harvest
fiftyfold, for the sun had shined upon them and the LORD had blessed their
growth.
5 Quentin did stand before the people and did declare the bounty that the
LORD had bestowed upon him.
6 So Quentin didst taketh the beans and didst prepare them in water and
didst share them with the people. The people did eat greedily and gutsily
until sundown and were filled to the *****'s bow.
7 And when the sun rose again the voice of the LORD didst speaketh from the
shrubbery to Quentin.
8 The voice of the LORD did ask of Quentin "Quentin; didst thou eat the
beans that thou didst harvest?".
9 Quentin replieth "Yae LORD I did eat thine gift which was good and did
taste great."
10 The LORD asked of Quentin "Where is the fifth share for the temple Elders
that I have commanded thou to bring?"
11 Quentin replied "Oh Lord of Hosts and Gog of Gods; I was wishing to bring
to thine Elders the fifth part of mine harvest but the Leader killed the
plant and it did not grow."
12 The anger of the LORD did blazeth against the leader and the LORD did
summoneth the Leader before the people.
13 The LORD sayeth unto the Leader "Eunuch thou art and thine loins shall
not bareth seed; thou hast deprived mine priests of their luxury."
14 The Leader bowed before the LORD and said "LORD have I not suffered
enough for killing thine bean-plant?"
15 The LORD sayeth unto the Leader "Thou hast eaten of the beans and thou
has grown from them. I will take the flesh that has grown by eating mine
beans from thee and shalt divide it amongst the priesthood; for this is
their share."
16 The Leader did vomit upon the ground and died.
17 From the vomit grew beans, and the beans harvested were fifty times ten
in number. Five hundred were the number of the beans harvested.

1 And Lo, the next day, The Elders didst suffer an almighty aching of head

but we suffer from an ache of the head, and yonder nausea. Howest may we ail

8 And Lo, a serpent appeared uponest the cone and did hisseth and writheth

thou needest not replace these items. Keepest thou thy trophies!
10 If thou walkest into the light, thou shalt feel utterly uncomfortable in
the sun, for it is bright but nay a cloud in the sky."
11 And the eldest said, "***** me, a talking snake, that was one hell of a
night.", and tossedeth the serpent away, which burstedeth into flame.
12 Another elder proclaimedeth, "Thou art a parselmouth!"
13 And the elders put backeth the cone and road sign, and praised the

Your brains may not be able to cope with reality, the cold hard truth. You
can't expect a pocket calculator to play a PS3 game. Perhaps the real
world frightens you and you need that cocoon of fantasy to go on living
life. To be honest, it is a big world full of numbers, words, facts and
opinions, you don't want to get overloaded with it all.
Maybe atheism may not be for you. Perhaps it is only for the intelligent,
those with that little bit extra up there to understand the big big world.
But just understand this. We're smarter. This explains the difficulty you
seem to be having with trying to convert us. Please bear this in mind.
I'll readily admit that you atheists have a valid perspective on life, the
importance of operation here in the real world, but you need more
perspective on the eternal aspects of things. That way things will actually
matter and make a difference ultimately.

Mark, you're missing the entire point! There is no evidence that this
"eternal" exists. And the philosophical and practical problems caused
by the concept of an "afterlife" are astounding. In the real world,
the simplest answer is usually the one that's right. And in the case
of all this "supernatural" nonsense, the simplest answer suggests that
there is simply *nothing* there. It is the one answer that explains
the evidence without twisting itself into a knot of contradictions.

Well, even I'm prepared to admit that there are just a few good thing about
religion. But the many bad things tend to cancel them out. Thank you for
agreeing with me in principle.

Fantasy is where the whole earth is covered with water for 40 days, seven of
every clean animal and two of every unclean animal in the world is herded on
a boat (so some kangaroos were taken all the way across the world for this)
and somehow, biodiversity is preserved at the end of it all. Fantasy is
someone destroying a couple of towns because of the number of gay people
there and didn't like it.

Face it, you're not really that smart, and to be honest, maybe a simplistic fantasy world, with a God-Creator and a
Young Earth, Noah's great big fun boat, a loving yet wrathful God who hates men who have sex with other men et

et cetera.
Here we go again... atheists talking only about bad things when it comes to
religion, cunningly overhearing those few good things when it comes to
religion.
Now, if that is not propaganda I don't know what is, 'Luke'.
(please ask for permission to reply, 'Luke')
Your brains may not be able to cope with reality, the cold hard truth.
Well, my brain can. I know that you are an idiot, and although that makes me
sad, 'Luke', I know that it is a 'cold hard truth'.
You
can't expect a pocket calculator to play a PS3 game.
Neither one can expect you understanding what you don't understand.
Perhaps the real world
frightens you and you need that cocoon of fantasy to go on living life.
So do you, 'Luke.' And your fantasy is that there is absolutely no God.
So, again... what's the difference then, 'Luke'?
To
be honest, it is a big world full of numbers, words, facts and opinions, you don't want to get overloaded with it
all.
Well, why should 'we'? You have already done that for us, 'Luke'.
Maybe atheism may not be for you. Perhaps it is only for the intelligent, those with that little bit extra up there
to
understand the big big world.
YES, 'Luke'. Atheism is only for sie masta race. Sie superior ones.
Now, 'Luke', can you say sieg heil really loud and could you put some balls into it?
But just understand this. We're smarter.
Yes, 'Luke', yesssss! Du bist ein uebermensch! SIEG, SIEG, SIEG!
This explains the difficulty you
seem to be having with trying to convert us.
Convert you from what? Being dumb and ignorant?
Please bear this in mind.
'We' will, 'Luke'. Don't worry.
Nice to see you two gentlemen getting along; perhaps you
can forge a lasting friendship by taking a ride on the
"fun boat."
Sorry pal, all the seats have been taken by you and your thinkalikes.
You can help the animals and then determine

Intelligence and religious beliefs - statistics
The following is a review of several studies of IQ and religiosity,
parts of this page are paraphrased and summarized by Jim Tims, from
Burnham Beckwith's article, "The Effect of Intelligence on Religious
Faith," Free Inquiry, Spring 1986.
STUDIES OF STUDENTS
1. Thomas Howells, 1927
Study of 461 students showed religiously conservative students "are, in
general, relatively inferior in intellectual ability."
2. Hilding Carlsojn, 1933
Study of 215 students showed that "there is a tendency for the more
intelligent undergraduate to be sympathetic toward=3F atheism."
3. Abraham Franzblau, 1934
Confirming Howells and Carlson, tested 354 Jewish children, aged 10-16.
Found a negative correlation between religiosity and IQ as measured by
the Terman intelligence test.
4. Thomas Symington, 1935
Tested 400 young people in colleges and church groups. He reported,
"There is a constant positive relation in all the groups between liberal
religious thinking and mental ability=3F There is also a constant positive
relation between liberal scores and intelligence=3F"
5. Vernon Jones, 1938
Tested 381 students, concluding "a slight tendency for intelligence and
liberal attitudes to go together."
6. A. R. Gilliland, 1940
At variance with all other studies, found "little or no relationship
between intelligence and attitude toward god."
7. Donald Gragg, 1942
Reported an inverse correlation between 100 ACE freshman test scores and
Thurstone "reality of god" scores.
8. Brown and Love, 1951
At the University of Denver, tested 613 male and female students. The
mean test scores of non-believers was 119 points, and for believers it
was 100. The non-believers ranked in the 80th percentile, and believers
in the 50th. Their findings "strongly corroborate those of Howells."
9. Michael Argyle, 1958
Concluded that "although intelligent children grasp religious concepts
earlier, they are also the first to doubt the truth of religion, and
intelligent students are much less likely to accept orthodox beliefs."
10. Jeffrey Hadden, 1963
Found no correlation between intelligence and grades. This was an
anomalous finding, since GPA corresponds closely with intelligence.
Other factors may have influenced the results at the University of
Wisconsin.
11. Young, Dustin and Holtzman, 1966
Average religiosity decreased as GPA rose.
12. James Trent, 1967
Polled 1400 college seniors. Found little difference, but high-ability
students in his sample group were over-represented.
13. C. Plant and E. Minium, 1967
The more intelligent students were less religious, both before entering
college and after 2 years of college.
14. Robert Wuthnow, 1978
Of 532 students, 37 percent of Christians, 58 percent of apostates, and
53 percent of non-religious scored above average on SATs.
15. Hastings and Hoge, 1967, 1974
Polled 200 college students and found no significant correlations.
16. Norman Poythress, 1975
Mean SATs for strongly antireligious (1148), moderately anti-religious
(1119), slightly antireligious (1108), and religious (1022).
17. Wiebe and Fleck, 1980
Studied 158 male and female Canadian university students. They reported
"nonreligious S's tended to be strongly intelligent" and "more
intelligent than religious S's."
Others :
Pratt (1937) among 3040 students at regional state college, taking
denomenational affiliation as sign of religiocity, "found that non-
affiliates recorded lower mean scores on the American council
Examination than any students affiliated to any denomenational group."
Francis (1979)(using fequency of prayer and chruch attendence) 2272
school children between 9-11,"found no relationship between school
assigned IQ's and religious behavior after controling for paternal
social class."
Francis'('86 replication) findings replicated in second study among 6955
students.
STUDENT BODY COMPARISONS
1. Rose Goldsen, 1952
Percentage of students who believe in a divine god: Harvard 30; UCLA 32;
Dartmouth 35; Yale 36; Cornell 42; Wayne 43; Weslyan 43; Michigan 45;
Fisk 60; Texas 62; North Carolina 68.
2. National Review Study, 1970
Percentage of students who believe in a Spirit or Divine God: Reed 15;
Brandeis 25; Sarah Lawrence 28; Williams 36; Stanford 41; Boston U. 41;
Yale 42; Howard 47; Indiana 57; Davidson 59; S. Carolina 65; Marquette
77.
[Marquette is a religious school]
3. Caplovitz and Sherrow, 1977
Apostasy rates rose continuously from 5 percent in "low" ranked schools
to 17 percent in "high" ranked schools.
4. Niemi, Ross, and Alexander, 1978
In elite schools, organized religion was judged important by only 26
percent of their students, compared with 44 percent of all students.
STUDIES OF VERY-HIGH IQ GROUPS
1. Terman, 1959
Studied group with IQ's over 140. Of men, 10 percent held strong
religious belief, of women 18 percent. Sixty-two percent of men and 57
percent of women claimed "little religious inclination" while 28 percent
of the men and 23 percent of the women claimed it was "not at all
important."
2. Warren and Heist, 1960
Found no differences among National Merit Scholars. Results may have
been effected by the fact that NM scholars are not selected on the basis
of intelligence or grades alone, but also on "leadership" and such like.
3. Southern and Plant, 1968
Studied 42 male and 30 female members of Mensa. Mensa members were much
less religious in belief than the typical American college alumnus or
adult.
STUDIES Of SCIENTISTS
1. William S. Ament, 1927
C. C. Little, president of the University of Michigan, checked persons
listed in Who's Who in America: "Unitarians, Episcopalians,
Congregationalists, Universalists, and Presbyterians [who are less
religious] are=3F far more numerous in Who's Who than would be expected on
the basis of the population which they form. Baptists, Methodists, and
Catholics are distinctly less numerous."
Ament confirmed Little's conclusion. He noted that Unitarians, the least
religious, were more than 40 times as numerous in Who's Who as in the
U.S. population.
2. Lehman and Witty, 1931
Identified 1189 scientists found in both Who's Who (1927) and American
Men of Science (1927). Only 25 percent of those listed in the latter and
50 percent of those in the former reported their religious denomination,
despite the specific request to do so, under the heading of "religious
denomination (if any)." Well over 90 percent of the general population
claims religious affiliation. The figure of 25 percent suggests far less
religiosity among scientists.
Unitarians were 81.4 times as numerous among eminent scientists as non-
Unitarians.
3. Kelley and Fisk, 1951
Found a negative (-.39) correlation between the strength of religious
values and research competence. [How these were measured is unknown.]
4. Ann Roe, 1953
Interviewed 64 "eminent scientists, nearly all members of the
prestigious National Academy of Sciences or the American Philosophical
Society. She reported that, while nearly all of them had religious
parents and had attended Sunday school, 'now only three of these men are
seriously active in church. A few others attend upon occasion, or even
give some financial support to a church which they do not attend=3F All
the others have long since dismissed religion as any guide to them, and
the church plays no part in their lives=3F A few are militantly atheistic,
but most are just not interested.'"
5. Francis Bello, 1954
Interviewed or questionnaired 107 nonindustrial scientists under the age
of 40 judged by senior colleagues to be outstanding. Of the 87
responses, 45 percent claimed to be "agnostic or atheistic" and an
additional 22 percent claimed no religious affiliation. For 20 most
eminent, "the proportion who are now a-religious is considerably higher
than in the entire survey group."
6. Jack Chambers, 1964
Questionnaired 740 US psychologists and chemists | |
