Object: Maybe it will just go away
There are various ways to cope with the ultimate meaninglessness of
human existence. A common one I remember from my teens years back in
the 40's. It was in a comic book whose main character was a young
teenager. "Marblehead" wakes up early one morning with a new and
disturbing question assailing his mind. He hurriedly dresses, rushes
downstairs to the kitchen where his mother is serenely serving the
morning coffee as she always had done for almost as long as she could
remember. Marblehead's father is sitting at the kitchen table absorbed
in the daily paper--just as always every morning from time immemorial.
Marblehead bursts into the kitchen and bellows out his urgent, crucial
query: "Mom! Dad! What is the meaning of life???" Mom, mouth agape,
drops a cup of freshly poured coffee crashing to the floor. Dad holding
the paper in both hands involuntarily reacts with a jerk and rips the
paper right down the middle.
In the stunned silence that followed, Mom busies herself with cleaning
up splattered coffee and broken pieces of the cup. Dad settles himself
back to normal as best he can, and finally makes makes his reply. "Son
don't you ever ask that question again!"

Au contraire, my good man. I posited what I understand to be the
atheist viewpoint that there is no _ultimate_ meaning to existence, and
went on to allegorize how most non-religious folk appear to deal with
it.

Heh.
Most of the people in this group won't see the humor in that, but I do.
While I'm not quite old enough to remember Marblehead, I recall getting
much the same reaction from my parents when I asked similar questions.
Although they tried to answer them, they were clearly uncomfortable
doing so.
I think, however, that after many years of asking that question, and at
varous times feeling dead certain I had the answer (metaphysical: the
search for ultimate truth; hedonistic: the search for perfect
happiness; biological: the production of viable offspring, and
whimsical: "42"), I have finally been forced to conclude that there is
no ultimate meaning and that it is futile to ascribe to our species a
quality that does not exist.
