(maybe not) OT: The Great Flood of 1936 |
I was just flipping channels the other day and saw an interesting
documentary on PBS.
Back in the day when homosexuals were strictly closeted, when almost no
one spared the rod (Dr. Spock hadn't written his book yet)…
Back before television, Engel v. Vitale, Griswold v. Connecticut, Eisenstadt v.
Baird and Roe v. Wade, R-rated movies, and hip-hop...
Back when the "greatest generation" was being schooled…
The Great Flood of 1936. <http://www.wgby.org/localprograms/flood/>
The Connecticut River flood caused $500,000,000 dollars in damage
(and that's 1936 dollars, when a cup of coffee was ten cents).
Why did some people refuse to leave their homes?
What was a problem in the flooded towns?
Hmm?
If you guessed 'looting' you would be correct.
Busted into the package stores* first.
Shoot to kill orders, and all that.
What's the saying? Oh yeah, "Plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose."
*AKA "party stores" or "liquor stores"

Not to mention the 1927 flood that covered six states (including some 13%
of Arkansas) and was the most destructive in US history before Katrina.
And Southern Decadence hadn't even been thought of yet...
