Yet a protected childhood is a relatively new thing, introduced by
Christian reformers. Only a century ago, children in England were made
to work in coal mines because they were considered the only ones with
bones flexible enough for the horrifying conditions. Imagine the
terror of their days in the mine shafts.
Human Flesh Was Cheaper
The simplest job was being a "trapper." A child was lowered 50 feet
down a shaft to squat in the mud in total darkness with trickling
water, beetles, and rats, waiting to open the trap door for other
children pulling coal cars. He would let the coal through and then
close the trap door again. That way, if there was a mine explosion, it
only killed the children between the doors. The trap doors cut off the
exploding gas from spreading further. Little children, seven or eight
years old, would sit in the dark every day, sometimes 18 to 20 hours,
listening for the coal cars. Some went insane. Yet in the mines, that
was the best job.
The children suffered terrible cruelty at the hands of adults, who
bargained for them, used them, and dismissed them as they pleased.
Many working underground were only eight or nine years old, girls as
well as boys. Some began toiling in the pits when they were only four
or five. They only saw the sun on Sundays. There were no hours of
relaxation, their meals were mostly eaten in the dark, and they lived
with parents who devoted them to this life.
Think about the actual pulling of the coal cars. Women or small
children had to crawl on their hands and knees dragging enormous
weights along narrow passageways that were only 18 to 24 inches in
height, and were as wet and slimy as common sewers. Women remained at
this work until the last hour of pregnancy. Boys and girls performed
the work by using a girdle and chain. A girdle was put around their
naked waist. A chain from the carriage was hooked to the girdle and
passed between their legs. Crawling on hands and knees they drew the
carriages after them.
"It is not necessary to describe," says Shaftesbury, the Christian
politician who fought against this horror for most of his life, "how
their sides were blistered, their ankles stained, their backs chafed
from rubbing against the roofs, or how they stumbled in the darkness
and choked in the stifling atmosphere. It is enough to say they were
obliged to do the work of horses or other beasts of the field, only
because human flesh and blood was cheaper in some cases and horse
labor was impossible in others."

Schmaltz herring is nothing like rollmops, twatty. That's why it's
called schmaltz not marinated.

Israel had two official languages: Hebrew and Arabic. English is
widely spoken or understood, Arabic is the daily language and language
of instruction for Israel's Arabic citizens, but for Jewish Israelis,
who comprise 83% of the country's population, the day-to-day language
is Hebrew -- the resurrected language of biblical times. Hebrew has
only come to life again as a vehicle for everyday speech during the
past 100 years. Although Hebrew ("the tongue of Canaan," according to
the Prophet Isaiah) was the language of much of the time period of the
Old Testament, it was gradually supplanted after the Babylonian
Captivity (586 B.C.) by Aramaic, another Semitic language, which
became the lingua franca of the region for the next 500 years. As
Jewish history moved into the Diaspora, Jewish communities spoke Greek
and Greek koine, Judeo-Persian, Latin and Arabic, Ladino -- the late
medieval Spanish of the Jewish community expelled from Spain in 1492
(spoken by many of their descendants to this day) -- and expressive,
irony-prone Yiddish, a medieval Rhine Valley German written with
Hebrew letters, which the Jewish communities of northern Europe
maintained and developed as they wandered deeper and deeper into
eastern Europe over the centuries.

About the Hebrew Language
More than 4.6 million people worldwide speak Hebrew, primarily in
Israel, where, along with Arabic, it is one of the two official
languages. Since Israel is a nation of immigrants, Hebrew is a second
language for many of its speakers. Many Israeli Arabs also speak
Hebrew as a second language.
Hebrew belongs to the Semitic language group, which also includes
Arabic. There are two main branches of Hebrew, Ashkenasic and
Sephardic. They differ mainly in their pronunciation of certain
letters. Ashkenasic Hebrew was spoken by the Jews in Central Europe,
while Sephardic Hebrew was spoken by those of the Mediterranean basin.
Sephardic pronunciation is used in Israel.
The Hebrew language has made an amazing return from near-extinction.
From the ninth century to the nineteenth century, Hebrew was not
spoken extensively, being used mostly in Jewish religious observance
and by scholars studying the Old Testament. However, it underwent a
renaissance when the Zionist movement-- begun in the nineteenth
century to work for the establishment of a State of Israel-- decided
that Hebrew should be the official language of Israel. Hebrew was
recognized as an official language of Jewish Palestine in 1922 and had
established itself as a modern language by the time Israel was
officially established in 1948. Modern Hebrew, adapted to meet modern
needs, is somewhat different from the ancient language of the Bible
from which it is descended.
Few English words come from modern Hebrew vocabulary, but many words
come from the Hebrew of the Bible, including amen, hallelujah, and
hosanna. In addition, many common names are of Biblical origin,
including Adam, Daniel, David, Deborah, Dinah, Joseph, Miriam, and
Rebecca. Some words that we think of as Yiddish actually come from
Hebrew vocabulary, including maven, chutzpah, and schlemiel.

Waking the Dead: Hebrew Rises From the Grave
Author: Robert Henderson
Published on: December 8, 1998
In Michael Crichton’s Jurassic Park, geneticists clone dinosaurs from
mummified blood cells. The RediMix megafauna end up on a tropical
island, where paleontologists thrill to hear calls and observe
behaviour not seen on Earth for eons. The experience allows scientists
to fill whole notebooks with data, which plugs gaping holes in the
fossil record.
Jurassic Park is pure fantasy, based on successive layers of
conjecture. Linguists, on the other hand, have logged at least one
real-life success at substantially the same venture. Cynics sneered at
Israel’s announced intention to make a long-extinct language its
official tongue. But by the mid-1950s, the naysayers were forced to
eat their words as Israelis, themselves freshly resurrected as a
people, pulled off the Hebrew Miracle.
Hebrew, a Semitic language related to Arabic, is the traditional
language of the Jews. Over its three-thousand year history, Hebrew
weathered wars, invasions, and mass enslavements. Roman depredation,
culminating in the destruction of Jerusalem’s High Temple in 70 CE,
signalled the end of Hebrew’s rich first life. Jews fled their
homeland in every direction, forming small, isolated communities that
would eventually establish new and diverse Jewish cultures all over
the world. For two thousand years, the period know as the “Diaspora,”
Jews managed to keep the flame alive without an army to defend them or
a government to coordinate their activities.
But, while scholars and theologians maintained a reading fluency of
Hebrew, it ceased to be anyone’s native language. Jews in exile
adopted Gentile languages, or created regional dialects such as
Yiddish and Ladino. Reading knowledge of Hebrew answered Jews’ needs,
therefore it ceased to change and foster new words and idioms. This is
the linguistic definition of death. Hebrew joined Latin and Sanskrit
as egghead-speak, a historical artifact heard mainly in ritual
repetitions, understood by a select few, seldom used to communicate
between individuals.
By the late 19th century, having suffered bigotry and repression for
generations, Jews began to agitate for the return of their ancestral
homeland. Some suggested reviving Hebrew. Most scoffed at the idea.
Hebrew had been frozen since 70 CE. People would grow impatient
stammering through a dead language, critics argued, and fall back on a
living auxiliary such as Yiddish.
Among the many linguists who worked to revive the language of Abraham,
Eliezer Ben-Yehuda is generally regarded as the father of modern
Hebrew. He undertook the tedious task of updating the language,
creating hundreds of new words from existing roots. Ben-Yehuda’s
Dictionary of Modern Hebrew, finished by his wife and son in the
1960s, is his memorial.
In 1948, Modern Hebrew became, not an official language, but THE
official language, of Israel. Yiddish and German, contenders for some
measure of recognition, were tossed out completely. To fully
appreciate the impact of this decision, note that language-reanimation
requires near-universal agreement on emotional issues, including:
o Standarded spelling.
o Standardised and updated grammar, including elimination of
cumbersome syntax.
o Standard pronunciation, in the face of participants’ “foreign”
accents.
o Use of the target language in all contexts formal and informal, in
spite of the fact that virtually all participants are fluent in
another. This issue, more than any other, kills most revival
movements.
Similar squabbles have crippled attempts to revive other languages,
such as Cornish and Cadien French. Yet the Israelis established and
promulgated a single, Modern Hebrew, which resembles the biblical
version about as closely as contemporary English resembles
Shakespeare.
Most astonishing of all, Israel’s founders abandoned their native
languages practically overnight. Hebrew is once again the native
tongue of most Jewish Israelis. (Some Orthodox Israelis continue to
speak Yiddish, arguing that only the Messiah has the right to restore
Hebrew.) A Hebrew Academy oversees the language, which has spawned an
impressive body of literature. Israeli universities teach in Hebrew.
There are Hebrew sitcoms and comic strips. Doctors, truck drivers,
rappers, and street thugs speak Hebrew. Amid the roar, the critics’
silence booms like thunder.
The Hebrew Miracle is no less astounding, and no less fascinating to
linguists, than Michael Crichton’s fictional clones. Granted, big
lizards are a bigger commercial draw than phonetics and vocabulary. I
doubt children, or adults for that matter, would queue up for
“Linguistic Park.” Nonetheless, to peoples who have lost their
language, and to those who love language in general, the Hebrew
Miracle is both a compelling tale and a beacon of hope.

Of course there were. These are routinely updated using the MIT

Applied Divinity, they are automatically removed from the others.
And all the books written prior to the website removing the references
to this (non-existen) department all suddenly had the references

The CIA are mistaken in knowing what the official language of a
country (one of the USA's allies) is.
'Israel' is not one of the USA's allies. It is one of its enemies.
And the CIA are known for getting things hopelessly wrong. Does 9/11
ring any bells?
So you think that the CIA doesn't even know what the languages spoken
in other countries are?
So it appears.
And getting more stupid with each and every word you type.
There are no limits to the CIA's stupidity. Nor, it seems, to yours.
Oh sure, you know better.
Of course I do.
Perhaps you should let the CIA know that you know better than they do?

LANGUAGE
Hebrew is the language of Israel. It has been throughout the ages as
the language of liturgy, philosophy and literature, and even in
community management and legal dealings. It is the main language of
instruction of Israel.
With the mass immigration from Europe and Arab countries, the British
Mandate administration recognized Hebrew as an official language of
Israel along with English and Arabic. It is the language of the
institutions and their educational network.

Jurassic Park is pure fantasy, based on successive layers of
conjecture. Linguists, on the other hand, have logged at least one
real-life su
cess at substantially the same venture.

Everybody stupid but you, huh?
Especially you, for believing all the crap you just quoted.
Do point out where all those are mistaken.
Simple. Hebrew is dead. Yiddish has replaced it.
Oh, so you think that the above references are all mistaken? Like the
CIA is (in your words) notorious for getting things wrong, these other
institutions are all guilty of the same mistake?
The CIA, other countries' CIA equivalents, the tourist guides, the
language schools and the professional linguists, all of them wrong.
You and only you are know the truth.
You're becoming incoherent in your rage, Blankovitz. "You and only
you are know the truth"? That's yiddish, isn't it?
Evasion noted.
Mea culpa.
Don't babble in Latin. Stick to yiddish.
It should have read:
The CIA, other countries' CIA equivalents, the tourist guides, the
language schools and the professional linguists, all of them wrong.
You and only you know the truth.
Ah, that's slightly more understandable. But what makes you think
that it is only I who know the truth?
I don't think that. Oddly enough, I think that every other reference
(and I can find many more) showing Hebrew to be a living language,
showing Hebrew to be the official language of Israel, showing and
publishing computer and traditional Hebrew language teaching programs
and linguists waxing lyrical about the revival of the Hebrew language,
to carry just a little bit more credibility than your constant cries
of "it's extinct".
I certainly think that the CIA and the Commission of Filipinos
Overseas carries a lot more credibility than the parroting of a
bigoted, lying cretin like yourself.
Let me also point out the United Kingdom Foreign Office website about
Israel

I suppose that you are going to say that they have got it wrong also?
You don't know the truth, you are not capable of posting anything
approaching the truth.
Coming from a jew, this has got to be the height of chutzpah (that's
yiddish too, BTW).
<begin lie>
Some words that we think of as Yiddish actually come from Hebrew
vocabulary, including maven, chutzpah, and schlemiel.
<end lie>
Do point out the lie in the above as all I did was take it from the
Transparent Language website
http://www.learn-hebrew-language-software.com/overview.htm
Perhaps you should get in touch with the Transparent Language
Corporation itself?
http://www.transparentlanguage.com/sub_comp_info.htm
Many yiddish words have ancient hebrew roots.
It certainly seems that some Yiddish words have Hebrew roots (do try
to learn that proper nouns are capitalized). But I thought that when I
pointed that out to you, you claimed it to be a lie.
Keep babbling the insanities. It won't be long before you get taken
away by the men in white coats...
Keep repeating your lies. It won't be long before uniformed personnel
from the BCIS come to your ghetto hovel and drag you off to the first
available flight to Tel Aviv.
That's UCIS, BTW and it's never going to happen.

The Jews have altered the history of M.I.T. to remove all traces of
the "Department of Applied Divinity" from the official history and all
other references.
One jew decided to close the Department and remove it from MIT's
official history. There was no conspiracy.
And all the other histories and references?
They all use MIT's database as their source. Another case of Chinese
whispers.
Do you have any idea how stupid you sound?
You seem to be under the illusion that every purveyor of information
gets its data independently and confirms it itself. Do you know how
stupid *that* sounds?
Do feel free to point out where I said that "every purveyor of
information gets its data independently and confirms it itself".
What I said was "Do you have any idea how stupid you sound"?
Do feel free to point out the rule under which I'm obliged to answer
your impertinent jew questions.
There is no rule.
Excellent. So what's the problem, *****?
If you want to babble to yourself feel free.
You're confused. Not only do you babble, you babble in yiddish.
Let me try to put it simply for you. What makes you think that every
history and reference uses the MIT's database as their source? Were
there no histories of MIT written before all references to the
"Department of Applied Divinity" were expunged from the MIT database?
Of course there were. These are routinely updated using the MIT
website. If the MIT website removes all references to the Dept of
Applied Divinity, they are automatically removed from the others.
And all the books written prior to the website removing the references
to this (non-existen) department all suddenly had the references
removed from the pages via some strange anti-printing press?
Don't be absurd. Such books go out of print when the new editions
appear. I don't know why I'm telling you this. You don't look at
books. You sit on your fat jew ***** and google.
And of course, nobody keeps the older editions?
BTW, I know that you find it difficult to understand the basics of
English grammar, but both the words "Jew" and "Google" are proper
nouns.
"Google" is also a verb. "Jew" is also an adjective and a verb.
Not unless I get paid for it.
Oh, I would imagine that they would only be too pleased to pay you to
point out their mistakes.
They haven't offered to yet.
