Union: Maytag to lay off 110 Iowa workers
April 23, 2004
NEWTON, Iowa -- Maytag Corp. officials told its workers' union that about
110 employees would be laid off in Newton Friday, union officials said.

"It's sad," said Pat Teed, president of Local 997 of the United Auto
Workers. The cuts come just two months after the company laid off 170
production workers.
Lynne Dragomier, a Maytag spokeswoman, confirmed workers would be laid off
but said the company doesn't disclose numbers.
"This is a business decision based on volume requirements," she said.
Maytag's laundry business is up overall, but demand is down for models
produced at Newton, Dragomier said.
Maytag's Newton factories produce washers and dryers, but Maytag has said
Newton won't get a shot at manufacturing newer model lines until costs are
cut and improvements are made in key performance areas. The company also has
its headquarters in Newton.
Layoffs dating back to 2002 push the number here to nearly 700, with about
1,525 production workers still on the job, union officials said. In the
mid-1990s, the number of active workers was 2,600. Maytag has more than
20,000 employees worldwide.
The notice Thursday came the same day Maytag, the nation's third largest
home appliance maker, reported higher sales and profits for the first three
months of 2004 and said it would increasingly outsource overseas to cut
costs.
Ralph Hake, Maytag chairman and chief executive, told analysts the company's
goal is to outsource from 30 to 40 percent of products to Asian
manufacturers.
The new layoffs come as the union and company negotiate a new contract to
replace an agreement set to expire June 1. The union and company haven't
commented on negotiations.
In a telephone call with analysts, Ralph Hake, Maytag chairman and chief
executive, said the company has built up its inventory as part of
contingency planning associated with the labor talks.
Shares of Maytag fell 40 cents to close at $28.88 on the New York Stock
Exchange.

The natural 'evolution' of NAFTA costs many thousands of jobs.
Ross
Perot warned of the 'huge sucking sound of jobs going south of
the border'.
The liberal media painted this man as 'scary for America' just
as they
lied about Barry Goldwater decades ago. Nonetheless, we now
see the
wisdom of their words. We are in the midst of a WORLD change
and the
American economy is not exempt. During the change brought
about by the
"Industrial Revolution", there was turmoil, job loss and many
changes
that are similar to today's HIGH TECH society, which has
brought about
increased production. When you have INCREASED PRODUCTION
(machines
replacing humans in doing jobs....look at your toaster,
electric range,
microwave, etc., they all 'save time', make your life
'convenient' but
each of them helped put people out of the jobs they once held.
If you
are a small business that employs 25 people and you are given
the
choice of a computer system by which the same product can be
produced
by 15 people and save you from paying the salaries, insurance,
unemployment
taxes, social security, and other employee headaches, wouldn't
you choose
to 'modernize' your business? Of course you can contrive an
exception
to the situation by inserting all types of conditions and
hypothetical,
but forget those and answer the question that is asked, and it
contains
none of your mentally escape hatches of 'what if', etc. The
unequivocal
answer is 'yes'. No put yourself in the position of one of
those people
who was 'dismissed'. What do you do? Whine about some
'injustice' because
I'm so deserving, I'm a wonderful person, etc., or do you
adjust your
goals and make the most of the situation? Now we hear the
whine of how
awful things are because I have a college degree and have to
take a job
of flipping hamburgers (uck...it's so 'beneath me'..that's for
low life's,
I'm superior), but the fact is that there have been people
doing that for
decades. How about 3 college degrees and no job but an entry
level, dead
end job that can be done by, and is in fact, done by a GED
holder in which
your pay is the same? That occurred in Clinton's so-called
era of prosperity
and continues today. So you can choose to mope and whine, to
blame someone
else, or you can get off your duff and be grateful for the
roof over your
head (even if it is a car, truck or camper), for food on your
table (orange
crate or folding card table), for your ability to see, to
hear, to walk, to
read. There are many people without legs. There are people
who are
physically blind, but for the life of me, it seems those
otherwise blind
are the pitiful ones...they are usually lazy and want some
"Free" handout
form the 'government's (some invisible entity with an
exceeding abundance
- not your working, taxpaying neighbor!) 'freebie'. When you
get into
your 'oh pity me' mind set, you need to start counting your
blessings and
develop a new plan. There is ONE with answers. Try talking
to HIM by
first thanking Him for the many unmerited things He's given
you (freely),
and start writing them down. If you are honest, you will stop
writing
at some point, as soon as you realize that in a lifetime you
could not
write them all down. Nonetheless, it helps to start doing
that..it will
help you see more things than you do now.
