In early June, Retired Gen. Barry McCaffrey took a (CENTCOM-requested) trip
to Iraq during which he "visited with both U.S. and Iraqi troops, security
forces and government officials". After the trip, he briefed the Senate
Foreign Relations Committee on his findings.
His report (pdf) is much more interesting—much more balanced—than most of
the guesswork that passes for punditry lately. What's more, General
McCaffrey has not been unwilling to criticize the Iraq war in the past, so
he's hard to describe as a partisan in this matter.
