McCarthyism alive and well in 21st century America |
http://www.thenation.com/blogs/thebeat?bid=1&pid=1108
In the summer of 1951, Senator Joe McCarthy's burgeoning red scare had
intimidated not just official Washington but the nation's media. Free
speech was taking a hit everywhere, but especially in McCarthy's home
state of Wisconsin, where the senator had been peddling his politics of
fear for years. It was in this context that John Patrick Hunter, a new
reporter for The Capital Times, a newspaper in Madison, Wisconsin that
had frequently tangled with McCarthy, was assigned to write a Fourth of
July feature story. Stuck for an idea, Hunter grabbed a copy of the
Declaration of Independence from the office wall, and said to himself,
"This is real revolutionary. I wonder if I could get people to sign it
now."
Hunter typed the preamble of the Declaration, six amendments from the
Constitution's Bill of Rights and the 15th amendment into the form of a
petition. Then, he headed to a park where families were celebrating the
Fourth. Of the 112 people he approached, 20 accused Hunter of being a
communist. Many more said they approved of sentiments expressed in the
petition but feared signing a document that might be used by McCarthy,
who frequently charged that signers of petitions for civil rights,
civil liberties or economic justice were either active Communists or
fellow travelers. Only one man recognized the historic words and signed
his name to the petition.
Hunter's petition drive became a national sensation. Time magazine, The
Washington Post and, of course, The Nation cited it as evidence of the
damage done by McCarthy and his 'ism to the discourse. President Harry
Truman called The Capital Times to praise the paper and cited Hunter's
article in a speech. Hunter and his colleagues on The Capital Times
would battle McCarthy for the next six years, gathering evidence of
wrongdoing and deception that would eventually embolden other
journalists and help shift the political climate sufficiently to permit
the Senate's censure of the red-baiting senator.
After McCarthy died in 1957, Hunter continued to champion the free
speech rights of civil rights activists, antiwar protesters and
anti-apartheid campaigners. Until his death this past November 26 at
age 87, he maintained that it was the job of journalists -- especially
those working on small-town and regional dailies far from Washington
and New York -- not merely to report the news, but also to defend
democracy and the liberties that underpin it. In his last years, Hunter
fretted that the consolidation and homogenization of media was robbing
the nation of maverick journalistic voices. And he worried a lot about
the state of our civil liberties.
Even as his health failed him, Hunter could be stirred to high passion
by the mention of Attorney General John Ashcroft's name. He despised
the Patriot Act, the internment of immigrants and other assaults on
individual liberty crafted by Ashcroft and his ilk in the aftermath of
the September 11, 2001 attacks. He even talked about dusting off his
1951 petition and taking it out on another July 4. "The thing is to
remind people that when these bastards take away anyone's freedom,
we're all threatened," Hunter told me a few months before he died. "In
the 1950s it was McCarthy. Now it's Ashcroft. Same fight."

But Ashcroft is a mayor pretend of Washingtoon,
so it's far from the same fight as McCarthy
who was simply a deranged Chicago strong arm
greaseball for Walt Disney.
But like Ashcroft is a Warren Buffet lackey
who couldn't even keep GM open for buisness,
nevermind something like Boeing.

Mirecki hospitalized after beating
By Ron Knox, Eric Weslander
Monday, December 5, 2005
Douglas County sheriff's deputies are investigating the reported
beating of a Kansas University professor who gained recent notoriety
for his Internet tirades against Christian fundamentalists.
Kansas University religious studies professor Paul Mirecki reported he
was beaten by two men about 6:40 a.m. today on a roadside in rural
Douglas County. In a series of interviews late this afternoon, Mirecki
said the men who beat him were making references to the controversy
that has propelled him into the headlines in recent weeks.
"I didn't know them, but I'm sure they knew me," he said.
Mirecki said he was driving to breakfast when he noticed the men
tailgating him in a pickup truck.
"I just pulled over hoping they would pass, and then they pulled up
real close behind," he said. "They got out, and I made the mistake
of getting out."
He said the men beat him about the upper body with their fists, and he
said he thinks they struck him with a metal object. He was treated and
released at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.
"I'm mostly shaken up, and I got some bruises and sore spots," he
said.
Douglas County Sheriff's Officials are classifying the case as an
aggravated battery. They wouldn't say exactly where the incident
happened, citing the ongoing investigation
The sheriff's department is looking for the suspects, described as
two white males between ages 30 and 40, one wearing a red visor and
wool gloves, and both wearing jeans. They were last seen in a large
pickup truck.
Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 843-TIPS or
the sheriff's office at 841-0007.
Mirecki recently wrote online that he planned to teach intelligent
design as mythology in an upcoming course. He wrote it would be a
"nice slap" in the "big fat face" of fundamentalists.
The remarks caused an uproar, Mirecki apologized, and KU announced last
week the class would be canceled.

Maybe Mirecki should of been carrying a gun if he is going to be making
statements that would cause people to want to beat him?
Was Mirecki gay? Did he oppose ID? Was he beat because he was gay or
because he said something that pissed people off? I ask this because you
start you story with the statement that you get beat up if you are gay or
oppose ID.
I do not know what you are talking about getting beat if you are gay, it is
the in thing to be gay today. On cable there is a gay channel and Bravo is
trying to become the second gay channel on cable. Every channel on TV has at
least one program that condones homosexual actions. Even Law and Order has
had characters that give the message that gay is OK.
I ask, do we need to have homosexual living played out on the screen or are
we going by the way of the Spartans. The Spartans encouraged their teens to
be homosexual to achieve traits take would make a great warrior society.
They archived this and ruled the world, but finally died out due to lack of
being able to bred offspring. In the end they were taken over by a small
army because their numbers had dwindled.
I see many young people doing the gay thing just to belong to a group. To be
accepted into this group all they have to do is have sex with someone of the
same sex. It may be hard at first, but becomes easier with time. If you talk
to the kid when first going to the group they will tell you the truth if
they are not ashamed of what they are doing. After a while they will give
the rhetoric of the group.

There are two active cases near where I live in south Alabama of two gay men
being beaten to death. The defendants in both cases have begun a "gay
panic" type defense. One of the victims was an 82 yr old man. What kind of
low life even has the nerve to claim that it was justified to beat an 82 yr
old man to death because they made an unwelcome pass at them? If that were
the case, all they had to do was laugh and walk away; and they could have
taken their time with that. Was an 82 yr old man going to chase them down
(yes them, there were two of them about 25 yrs old) and force himself on
them both? But it will work for them, and they will get greatly reduced
sentences. You have fundies preachers declaring from the pulpit that "gays
shall surely be put to death;" and it's really happening out there more and
more. Then juries let these murderers off with light sentences because
their preachers have taught them it is OK to hate gay people. This is the
third such case that I have seen in rural south Alabama in the past year;
second in the past two months.

If that is happening in South Alabama, then something has to be done in
South Alabama. I have only heard of a few so-called gay beatings or deaths
due to being gay in the last 15 years and some of them were suspected to be
a drug deal went bad.
As I said in my post before being gay seems to be a in-thing in the rest of
the US. Here in New Mexico there seems to be a lot of lesbians. I have
talked to a few that I have gotten to know and they also see being lesbian
like being in a sorority or a fad. They say the ***** is the real lesbian,
but the one that goes after the ***** and acts like a woman is not a true
lesbian, just a freak.

Now its not only gays getting beat up. If you oppose ID, you get it
too.....
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Mirecki hospitalized after beating
One needs to carry a gun to defend his right to free speech? Is this
how it works in Kansas, or is it true in all states with a large
fundamentalist following?
Was Mirecki gay? Did he oppose ID? Was he beat because he was gay or
because he said something that pissed people off? I ask this because you
start you story with the statement that you get beat up if you are gay or
oppose ID.
I thought it was obvious from the story. He was beaten because he
opposed Intelligent Design. Apparently this is enough to provoke
fundamentalists to violence in Kansas.
It still happens. What's on the tube has no bearing on that fact,
unless it's preachers like Pat Robertson or Jerry Falwell, etc.,
actually inciting violence with their hateful rants.
That's some history you have there. No mention of class mobility as a
factor at all.
Are you speaking from experience? Or is it third hand from some
religious tract?
