Media Outraged Over Staged Pro-War Propaganda Event |
http://www.transterrestrial.com/archives/005847.html#005847
March 3rd, 1945
IWO JIMA (Routers) Controversy has erupted among the press corps in the
last few days as news has spread that the now-famous picture of the
"victorious" flag raising over Iwo Jima a couple weeks ago was staged. Many
believe that, as the huge number of casualties mounted in the ill-fated and
pointless invasion of this tiny island, the Roosevelt administration,
desperate for a bit of pro-war propaganda, arranged to have the photo taken
for dissemination to the world's news services...

Wow. That is *So* *Much* like a draft-dodger-turned-deserter
using military personnel as backdrops in his staged propaganda
that it's scary. And I'm not being the least bit sacrcastic.
Well, maybe just a little.

I think that it is scary when you can't trust anything that this
administration says or does anymore.

What are they parodying?
Or, more importantly, do you have the guts to admit that they are
comparing a draft-dodger-turned-deserter using military men as
props in his propaganda pieces to the raising of the flag at
Iwo Jima?
This is low. I mean, this is really _low_.

Actually, when it was publicized that the famous photo was staged
there was an uproar. It is a bit distressing to see dishonesty used,

Oh, I agree, especially when it turns out that the charges that the event
was staged were themselves dishonest. I suggest that you read the comment

The article was satire and the comments deal with it as satire. I was
not talking about that. I was talking about the actual controversy. I
just did a quick research since I was working from memory and the
story is more muddled. The flag picture, I gather was not staged, but
it is of the second flag raising. The report was not dishonest, the
reported messed up and admitted he made an error.
Then again, MacArthur's gallant return to the Philippines, wading in
the surf, was stage for the photographers. So the notion of staging
military events for publicity is not exactly new.
