Medical problems and the gods' designs |
I visited the library before they opened and scored a number of free
books, most of them dating before 1960. Among one of the larger books
that I didn't take was a "Maternity and child nursing" book which was
likewise very old and obsolete in numerous ways that even I -- a layman
in medical terms -- recognized as obsolete.
There was a picture and detailed description of a birth defect wherein
a male's urethra opening occured below the "nut sack." Apparently this
is fairly common in mammals, not just primates.
Religion's explanation: Birth defects are designed by the gods to test
the faith of the children who experience them and their parents.
Science's explanation: The evolution of mammals (genetics) and human
embryology (hormonal development of the dividing cells.)
Savages would posit that their gods' punishments are deliberate, not
due to the poor designs of cells and all organic life. Science describes
natural selection at the genetic, molecular level driven by the
survivability of the organs that express the genes.
Thumbing through the nursing manual from the 1960's, it was a stark
exhibition of how much science has learned in the past 45 years -- and
how little religion has changed in the past 10,000.

Peter:
Sorry do you have information about religion as it was 100 centuries
ago?
I would like to read about that!
As far as I know monotheism was not present before 1500 BC
Polytheism was everywhere
Nowadays only about 20% of the world's populace should be considered
polytheist (not counting the Buddhist who although believe in many
gods,
don't worship any.
Monotheism is dominant (about 50 % of the world's population)
Consider what you say, and don't post it to readily
Not all monotheists are Roman Catholics:)

It can be summed up in a nutshell.
The gods are responsible for anything we can't understand - and I'm not
going to try to understand and don't try to change my mind.
Christian religion has added "god is good and we are responsible for bad."
Whoever wants to be a Christian should tear the eyes out of his Reason.
-- Martin Luther
"All the article of our Christian faith, which God has revealed to us in His
Word, are in the presence of reason shearly impossible, absurd and false.
....Reason is the greatest enemy that faith has. ...She is the devils
greatest *****... a ***** eaten by scabs and leprosy, who ought to be
trodden underfoot and destroyed, she and her wisdom...Throw dung in her
face...drown her in baptism"
-- Martin Luther
"If by any effort of reason I could conceive how God, Who shows so much
anger and iniquity, could be merciful and just, there would be no need of
faith."
-- Martin Luther

Only the RCC says it is monotheistic and they do it by saying it is a
mystery and *CAN'T* be understood.
Every body else says they are polytheistic.

Hm, you might be right.
If RCC is actually worshiping three gods,
than polystheists and monotheist are evenly big:)
Still you are only guessing about 10.000 years ago.
As far as the evidence is concerned,
everybody could have been an atheist,
and what archeologists considers to be godesses,
may have been just sex-toys:
OK your guess is more probable,
but it's still a guess

Minor details like how many gods a person worships are irrelevent. What
matters is peoples attitudes about thier religion, and their attitudes
towards people who don't share that religion.
