Mel Gibson has come under fire for being hard on Jews in his film
"The Passion of the Christ" -- but apparently, he feels that
Protestants are also doomed to damnation. In fact, it looks like Gibson,
a conservative Catholic, believes that his Episcopalian wife could be
going to hell.
Gibson was interviewed by the Herald Sun in Australia, and the reporter
asked the star if Protestants are denied eternal salvation. "There
is no salvation for those outside the Church," Gibson replied. "I
believe it."
He elaborated: "Put it this way. My wife is a saint. She's a much
better person than I am. Honestly. She's, like, Episcopalian, Church
of England. She prays, she believes in God, she knows Jesus, she
believes in that stuff. And it's just not fair if she doesn't
make it, she's better than I am. But that is a pronouncement from
the chair. I go with it."

I get a kick out of Gibson as an actor but he needs to talk to a priest
about this, or recite some of his prayers. The Catholics, as all others,
believe they are the one true church but you can get into heaven in any
number of ways. In fact being good and being afraid to go to hell is
sufficient.

Having been brought up Catholic, I was dumbfounded by this

all other religions are damned. Rather, most of my instruction
was that God was loving and that as long as you led a just life
you would be in heaven.
Anyhoo....what is the "chair"? Not the Pope is it? First, despite
JPII's other lunatic ravings, he's been the most ecumenical pontiff

Second, doesn't Mel belong to some ultraconservative cult that
disavows the authority of the Pope since VatII?

IIRC that there is "no salvation outside the Church" is part of
infallible teaching of the RCC, but there is some question as to the
meaning of "outside" and "church". There's a bit of a rundown at
http://www.catholic.com/library/Salvation_Outside_the_Church.asp

Anyhoo....what is the "chair"? Not the Pope is it?

IIRC it's a way of referring to the office of pope. A bit like an
American might think the president as a man is a git but may
never-the-less feel that they owe loyalty to the office.

First, despite
JPII's other lunatic ravings, he's been the most ecumenical pontiff
ever.

Provided you agree with the Teaching of the RCC!

Second, doesn't Mel belong to some ultraconservative cult that
disavows the authority of the Pope since VatII?

Dunno, but wouldn't be amazed if he did.

CATECHISM OF THE CATHOLIC CHURCH

THE PROFESSION OF THE CHRISTIAN FAITH
CHAPTER THREE
I BELIEVE IN THE HOLY SPIRIT
ARTICLE 9
"I BELIEVE IN THE HOLY CATHOLIC CHURCH"
Paragraph 3. The Church Is One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic
III. THE CHURCH IS CATHOLIC
and starting at 830 covers it.
Bassically it says you have to be a Catholic to get to heaven, then explains
how everybody else can get there.
"847 This affirmation is not aimed at those who, through no fault of their
own, do not know Christ and his Church:
Those who, through no fault of their own, do not know the Gospel of Christ

moved by grace, try in their actions to do his will as they know it through
the dictates of their conscience - those too may achieve eternal
salvation.337"

I remember a story about him on NPR one time. He isn't a traditional
Catholic. He's of a fairly fundamentalist sect that's broken away
from the main Catholic church, and who rejects the authority of the
Pope. I don't believe they're an extremely common sect, but there are
enough of them. You can't gauge anything he says by what most people
know about "the Catholic church".

I think it depends on when you were brought up Catholic. I can date my
atheistic stirrings to a conversation with a priest in 1963. (I was 11 at the
time.) He said only Catholics go to heaven. I asked about little children in
deepest, darkest Africa who never heard of Catholicism. He stuck with his
position. I thought (but couldn't say out loud) "That's not fair. God made them
and stuck them in Africa and then punishes them for it." I guess that was
before Vatican II. I understand the church is a bit more inclusive these
days.
Actually, I think I realized I didn't believe in any god sooner than I might
have if I had been brought up in a less oppressive religion. The fact that it
was in my face all the time forced me to consider it and decide how I felt.

I learned all these lessons before 1957 when they asked me not to come back
to the private Catholic boarding school I attended.
In fact in Catholic elementary school the priest frequently used "Bongo" the
African native who went to heaven after living a good life.

Indeed it is! So "inclusive," in fact that most in the priesthood are

Apologists have to explain why Catholic clergy have a far higher rate
of offending than any other profession, including profession that
involve contact with children. The Roby Swan study found that priest
were 4 X more likely than the next most likely group. It looks on the
surface like Catholicism does make Catholic pedophilia.

Right. According to them, John XXIII and all the popes after have
been antipopes. I have no idea who they think the real pope is, or
whether there is one. But maybe it's just the voice of the chair that
they hear in their heads, along with the radio broadcasts from Venus
and the CIA.

Gosh. I wonder what happens if you put a Pope and an Anti-Pope in the
same room?!

I don't know, but it's worth a try.

Would it solve the energy crisis?

If they annihilated each other? I don't know about the energy crisis,
but we'd all be better off.

Okay but if we didn't let them touch, maybe we could get a reaction going
that could run some turbines. Maybe if we put a Methodist between them?

Mel Gibson has come under fire for being hard on Jews in his film
"The Passion of the Christ" -- but apparently, he feels that
Protestants are also doomed to damnation. In fact, it looks like
Gibson, a conservative Catholic, believes that his Episcopalian
wife could be going to hell.

Gibson was interviewed by the Herald Sun in Australia, and the
reporter asked the star if Protestants are denied eternal
salvation. "There is no salvation for those outside the Church,"
Gibson replied. "I believe it."

He elaborated: "Put it this way. My wife is a saint. She's a much
better person than I am. Honestly. She's, like, Episcopalian,
Church of England. She prays, she believes in God, she knows Jesus,
she believes in that stuff. And it's just not fair if she doesn't
make it, she's better than I am. But that is a pronouncement from
the chair. I go with it."
...

I get a kick out of Gibson as an actor but he needs to talk to a
priest about this, or recite some of his prayers. The Catholics, as
all others, believe they are the one true church but you can get into
heaven in any number of ways. In fact being good and being afraid to
go to hell is sufficient.

Having been brought up Catholic, I was dumbfounded by this
statement. I have NEVER heard anyone in the RCC say that
all other religions are damned. Rather, most of my instruction
was that God was loving and that as long as you led a just life
you would be in heaven.

Anyhoo....what is the "chair"? Not the Pope is it? First, despite
JPII's other lunatic ravings, he's been the most ecumenical pontiff

I had a conservative RC friend who believed that only Roman Catholics
would go to heaven (And only those Roman Catholics in "good standing
with the Church".).
I asked her: "Didn't John-Paul II say that Martin Luther did a
great service to the RCC, because he caused the RCC to reform
itself?"
She then stated that the Virgin Mary (at Fatima) had warned about
the "corruption of a Pope".
Perhaps ultra-conservative Roman Catholicism is somehow tied into the
belief in the Fatima apparitions/prophesies?

a conservative Catholic, believes that his Episcopalian wife could be
going to hell.

But that is a pronouncement from
the chair. I go with it."
...

At least he's honest about it. I find it refreshingly rare when an
individual of faith doesn't try to ratinoalize away the "trouble
spots" of their religion just to ease their own conscience. There are
some beliefs I can't respect no matter what, but in general, I can
respect a person with even some very noxious views if they're willing
to swallow the good with the bad. Few things are more detestable (or
more common) than hypocrisy. In this instance, Mel's not being a
hypocrite. Whatever I may think of his beliefs, I can really respect
him for that.

I have a feeling Mel isn't going to be "gettin' any" for a while ;)
