Michael Medved: The "tolerant" Sir Elton wants to ban religion |
From the article:
-----------------------------------------------------------
When secularists complain about the influence and agenda of religious
conservatives they most often focus on the alleged "intolerance" of the
Christian right. A recent interview with pop music legend Elton John,
however, demonstrates that non-believers will go much further than the
faithful in their expressed desire to stifle all dissent.. . .
.. . . The controversies about public display of religious symbols nearly all
center on secular demonstrations of militancy and narrow-mindedness,
involving attempts to remove or suppress expressions of faith (like crosses
in parks, or Ten Commandments displays in public buildings, or the
words "under God" in the pledge) that have existed innocuously for decades.
Very few of these disputes involve efforts by the faithful to impose new
symbols in prominent places, or to "ram their faith down the throats" of
the unwilling public at large. It's the secular left that's consistently
intolerant of American society as it's existed for years, not religious
conservatives who express unwillingness to allow public disagreement with
their convictions. In the bitter debate about teaching our children about
the origins of life on earth, religious activists make no attempt to block
the teaching of Darwinism or random natural selection, but it's
pro-evolution fanatics who fanatically resist any messages or questions
that even hint at Intelligent Design.

Me: Elton John, as popular as his music may be be, doesn't represent
any scientific or philosophical movement.
In the bitter debate about teaching our children about
the origins of life on earth, religious activists make no attempt to block
the teaching of Darwinism or random natural selection ...

What the heck is a "pro-evolution fanatic?
It that like a "pro-gravity fanatic"?
I first came across Medved maybe 25 or more years ago in England when
Channel 4 showed a series of all-time worst movies and was impressed.
Until I moved to the US and was surprised to hear him making a fool of
himself as a religious conservative attacking things he didn't
understand.
But you have to be a complete idiot to say something as stupid as the
quoted paragraph. And not to realise what says about him. It's not
just wrong, it's stupid, dishonest and offensive.

....which does not alter the fact that it is unconstitutional...
Very few of these disputes involve efforts by the faithful to impose new
symbols in prominent places, or to "ram their faith down the throats" of
the unwilling public at large.
Hang on, let's get this straight: These expressions of faith which have
been erected on public buildings, and to which the secular and narrow
minded object for no reason other than the rather weak one that they
are prohibited by the constitution are very few in number?
It's the secular left that's consistently
intolerant of American society as it's existed for years, not religious
conservatives who express unwillingness to allow public disagreement with
their convictions.
....right. So it's the liberals, with their consistent intolerance about
such matters as gay rights, freedom of expression, racism, support for
minorities and those other ridiculous restrictions they promote who are
to blame.
In the bitter debate about teaching our children about
the origins of life on earth, religious activists make no attempt to block
the teaching of Darwinism or random natural selection,
.....except by demonising scientists who want to teach it, and claiming
that it is an atheistic religion, of course...
but it's
pro-evolution fanatics who fanatically resist any messages or questions
that even hint at Intelligent Design.
How intollerant of those fanatics to try to ensure that religion is not
taught in science classes! How dare they use the legal system of the
USA to ensure that the laws of the USA are properly enforced!
It's plain to any clear-thinking human being that this ridiculous
support for the rule of law and the constitution is what is undermining
the very fabric of society!

wonder if medved would be upset if someone said being jewish was an
'objective moral disorder' like the vatican has done to gays
wonder if he'd be upset if jews were prohibited from marrying like gays
are....
just wondering...

If I should ever find myself fearing the opinion of Elton John, it

It seems to me that the validity of their position is like a

If it happened to be Saturday night he could conceivably be alright for
a fight, and you might want to wear some sort of shin guard.

Medved is lying. He generalises from one gay atheist (and former
school mate of mine) who is reacting to years of bigotry and hatred by
the same religious extremists he (Medved) sucks up to as an Uncle Tom
himself. And then lies about it being "expressed desire to stifle all
dissent".
