I don't see Microsoft falling any
time soon as Mel predicts, but having used Linux for a relatively
short time now, I can say without a doubt I'll never use Microsoft
anything again, pending any forthcoming lawsuits.

You'd think that, people being what they are, "getting something for
nothing" would have enormous appeal...yet Linux still has only a sliver-thin
share of the desktop pie. I suppose it's hard to effectively market
something that doesn't "belong" to any one corporation. Apple and MS can
spend buttloads of money advertising their OSs, and it shows. I will say
I'm very impressed with OS X (which is, of course, based on BSD Unix). I
started setting up a Linux system a 2-3 years ago - Suse, I believe - but
didn't really have the time to devote to the required incessant tinkering.
Maybe it's time to try again. It'll be interesting to see what apps are
available, and whether the file formats are compatible with mainstream
programs like Word, Excel, Photoshop, Quark, InDesign, etc.

It isn't marketed because very few can make a profit off open source.

yeah. that's the whole idea. free software so that all mankind can benefit.
no proprietary closed source programs, which are doing god knows what behind
the scenes. software IS source code. if you can read the source, you can
know for sure exactly what it is and what it is not doing.

Red Hat took the Linux kernel, perfected it, and then spun off Red Hat
Enterprise (their version of XP Professional). To keep the Red Hat
'spirit' of open source alive, they used the Fedora project as a guinea
pig for new development in the open source community, effectively
'hiring' thousands of developers the world over, for free. They take
the proven, stable aspects of Fedora and incorporate it into
their Enterprise software ..and Fedora remains the cutting edge of
everything Linux. As for compatibility, there's CodeWeaver, which
effectively allows Word, Excel... to be fully compatible with
OpenWriter, OpenCalc, Impress (Powerpoint), and ODBC (Access). Even
without CodeWeaver, most files are already recognized between the two
environments. These versions have only recently caught up with the
complexity and usefulness of their XP counterparts, so anything
you saw/used on Suse 2-3 years ago is way outdated.
www.google.linux.com (a blurb on the new Suse)

yeah, with Novell's recent acquisition of SuSe and Ximian, Linux is going
mainstream fast now. Linux servers already power the Internet and have done
so for years. Those Windows servers (and Windows desktops) out there just
power the worms, viruses, trojans, spam networks etc.
when i was young, i wanted to be a Microsoft Systems Engineer. I'm all
better now.
i'm thinking maybe someone will start MA (Microsoft Anonymous) for all those
people wanting to kick the Microsoft habit.
Step 1: We admitted that we were powerless over our addiction to Microsoft
software, that Microsoft had made our lives unmanageable.
Step 2: We came to believe that a Power greater than ourselves could destroy
Microsoft.
Step 3: We made a decision to turn our lives over to the goal of bringing
Microsoft down.
Step 4: We were searching and fearless. We destroyed all our Microsoft
inventory.
Step 5: We disclosed to all, all the Microsoft software we had ever used (to
our shame).
Step 6: We became entirely ready to uninstall all this Microsoft software.
Step 7: We humbly asked our computers to forgive us and entered in the
commands to uninstall Windows.
Step 8: We made a list of all the computers we have ever harmed with
Microsoft software and became willing to make amends to them all.
Step 9: We made direct amends to all these computers, wherever possible,
except where they were too obsolete or burnt out for it to make a difference
anymore.
Step 10: We continued to scour all our computers, PDAs, cellphones and other
electronic devices for traces of Microsoft software. When we found them, we
erased them.
Step 11: We sought through the Internet and the wider community of open
source software supporters to continue to upgrade all our software, seeking
only the best for our computers and the processing power to run it all.
Step 12: Having had a spiritual awakening as a result of these steps, we
told everyone we knew and then kicked back with an enormous fat joint and
blew our minds.
[ see, Greg, even the most mundane of subjects lends itself to humour.
that's the atj Way! ]

what's the matter fag boy?
Ten Top Signs that you're an Internet Nut.
10. When filling out your driver's license application you give your IP
address.
9. You no longer ask prospective dates what their sign is, instead your line
is "Hi, what's your URL?"
8. Instead of calling you to dinner, your spouse sends e-mail.
7. You're amazed to find out spam is a food.
6. You "ping" people to see if they're awake, "finger" them to find out how
they are, and "AYT" them to make sure they're listening to you.
5. You search the Net endlessly hoping to win every silly free T-shirt
contest.
4. You introduce your wife as "my lady@home.wife" and refer to your children
as "client applications".
3. At social functions you introduce your husband as "my domain server".
2. After winning the office super bowl pool you blurt out, "I feel so
"colon-right parentheses!"
And the number one sign you are an Internet Geek:
1. Two Words: "Pizza's Here!"

Smartest Hair Color
Three dumb blondes were shipwrecked on a desert island. They came across a
magic lamp and a genie came out.
The genie said that he would grant them each a wish. The first blonde asked
to be made smart, the genie turned her into a brunette and she swam off the
island.
The second blonde asked to be even more smarter, so the genie turned her red
hair and she built a boat and sailed off the island.
The third blonde asked to be made the smartest, so the genie turned her into
a man and he walked onto the bridge, and off the island.

A guy walks into a post office one day to see a middle-aged, balding man
standing at the counter methodically placing "Love" stamps on bright pink
envelopes with hearts all over them. He then takes out a perfume bottle and
starts spraying scent all over them.
His curiosity getting the better of him, he goes up to the balding man and

"But why?" asks the man.

you're the arsehole here.

i can develop just fine on Win98SE. it runs, mySQL, Apache, PHP & Perl.

Why should I upgrade to Win2000 when Win98SE does all I need it to?

why upgrade at all? when the time is right, i'm binning all my Microsoft
software and going 100% opensource software for everything.

and if you only knew what you're yapping about fag boy.

BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

go check your neighbors dog if you're in heat again fag boy.
A guy walks into a post office one day to see a middle-aged, balding man
standing at the counter methodically placing "Love" stamps on bright pink
envelopes with hearts all over them. He then takes out a perfume bottle and
starts spraying scent all over them.
His curiosity getting the better of him, he goes up to the balding man and
asks him what he is doing. The man says, "I'm sending out 1,000 Valentine
cards signed, 'Guess who?'"
"But why?" asks the man.
"I'm a divorce lawyer," the man replies.

Let 'em keep shelling out hundreds of dollars for software.. Bill
needs a few more billion so he can buy a continent.

I'm just waiting for him to buy his own carrier battle group to sail
around the world enforcing his copyrights.

He's begun the enforcement. If you need a specific little piece of
software Microsoft supplies for free they are now asking for
verification of your operating system's license. You either have to
download an authentication checker and run it or supply your Product
Key or both. It won't be long until everyone running Microsoft
products needs to verify all their licenses for updates and patches
and where Microsoft leads others will follow. Sooner or later folks
will find a way to circumvent this but until they do it should be
interesting to watch.

i've found a way to circumvent it. don't upgrade to XP. simple.

I don't have that problem. Microsoft gives plenty of free copies of
all their software to give away.

The third blonde asked to be made the smartest, so the genie turned her into
a man and he walked onto the bridge, and off the island.

too stupid to hunt it yourself fag boy?
A guy walks into a post office one day to see a middle-aged, balding man
standing at the counter methodically placing "Love" stamps on bright pink
envelopes with hearts all over them. He then takes out a perfume bottle and
starts spraying scent all over them.
His curiosity getting the better of him, he goes up to the balding man and
asks him what he is doing. The man says, "I'm sending out 1,000 Valentine
cards signed, 'Guess who?'"
"But why?" asks the man.
"I'm a divorce lawyer," the man replies.
