Mindful Michiganders Take On Indecent Mall Window Displays |
Decency never takes a holiday.
http://headlines.agapepress.org/archive/12/152006e.asp
(AgapePress) - Concerned citizens near Green Oak Township, Michigan,
say despite some success already, they plan to continue their
letter-writing campaign concerning window displays featuring
scantily-clad mannequins at Victoria's Secret in the town mall. The
campaign is one part of a two-pronged effort to stem exposure to
indecency in the area.
Letters have been written to the store, Victoria's Secret's parent
company, mall management, community officials, and business leaders.
The letters object to what concerned citizens have labeled "unnecessary
exposure to indecent sexual imagery" -- such as mannequins sporting
G-strings, bras, nylons, and stiletto high heels. The correspondence
also requests a meeting with corporate officials to explain that area
citizens feel more modest standards should be reflected in the
displays.
Hamburg Township's Patrick Flynn, who along with several of his church
members has been part of the grassroots effort, says they are pleased
that the letters have yielded more toned-down displays recently.
"Victoria's Secret has changed [the displays] twice since the mall
manager asked them to do that," says Flynn. "But knowing Victoria's
Secret and their willingness to always press the envelope, it's better
than it was -- but it's still unacceptable."
Flynn says their goal is to convince Victoria's Secret to market only
morally neutral products, rather than sexually provocative items, in
their mall window displays. "And if they feel that they have to display
such things, keep it inside your store," he suggests to the retailer.
"Don't assault the public with it; it's not fair. It's not right."
Some members of the same group have also extended their objection to
indecency to walking protests at an adult "novelty" shop about a mile
from the Green Oak Village Place Mall. They say it is another part of
an overall effort to educate the public about the violations of
humanity and dignity that surround pseudo-pornographic imagery.

There you go, speak for ALL atheist and show that atheist spirit!!!
You are the spokesperson for all atheist, and you are representing how

Uh huh. When did that happen? You're going to need to show just what

No, YOU are going to have to show just WHEN the poster came to speak

Actually, you are doing it for me. You just don't get it yet. It will

Wrong. You made a rather wide-ranging claim, and now I'm calling you

No, I'm not. You claimed somebody is speaking for all atheists, and I
asked you to prove that. So far you've failed. Your childish antics
and insults prove THAT, certainly.
Now, considering what you consider 'proof', I suppose I can conclude
that David Duke, Stalin, and Mao all speak for you, since, after all,
you've never shown that they don't.
Or admit that you made that up, your call.
I don't have to admit anything, you are supporting my statement just

Wrong again. I've made no statement of that sort or of any support for

I don't see you saying his statement is wrong. All indications show

You just did.
You are an atheist, right? I don't see any atheist disagreeing with

It's certainly a tacky comment, but America does suffer from it's
neurotic attitudes toward sex. We are the country with the highest rates
of sexually transmitted diseases among teens, highest rates of teen
pregnancy, the highest rates of abortion among teens and the highest
rate of birth too teens of developed countries. It appears to me that
the religious zealots are at fault for much of this. Sensible sex
education and sensible attitudes toward sex would help decrease these.
You have to decide. Do you want decent sex education and rational
discussion or do you want America to continue to have more unnecessary
abortions caused by the actions of religious zealots.

FYI in San Francisco a year or two ago, a few people complained about
a store in the Castro with its mannequins set up in leather with an
S&M motif due to it being within a couple of weeks of the adult-rated
Folsom Street Faire. Seems some parents (including ones living in the
Castro) didn't want to have to explain to their 6 year olds what the
whips were for, not to mention some other implements. Another store
had a wooden sculpture featuring an oversized penis and that also
generated complaints - but that was in kind of an art gallery and the
scupture was some sort of south-east asian art (at least that is what
they told the press).
Young's comments remind me of a line from some silly old movie. "You
think that is the monster? Wait til you see the monster!" Just some
mannequins in underwear (J Young's complaint) wouldn't raise an
eyebrow around here. :-)

First let's keep things in perspective and leave the personal attacks
out of this.
I don't always agree with Young; however, I do happen to think that
this article he presents makes a valid point.
They are not objecting to the models wearing "underwear", they are
objecting to the style of underwear.
Let's keep something in mind. In the malls, parens have children.
Childrens minds are not mature and we should remember that. The
windows are not something parents can just shield from their children.
They are in the open. Unlike a television where a parent can control
what their children see and watch, they can't control what their
children see in the windows.
So the article has a valid point, keep the provocative stuff inside the
stores where the people who go in and shop there, might expect to see
it.
What I don't understand is some of you who are atheist, don't mind this
stuff in front of our children, but get all bent out of shape over
memorials on the sides of our highways that are shaped like crosses and
demand that they be taken down.
http://brutus1964.blogspot.com/2005/12/atheist-group-sues-to-remove-highway.html
I know here in Delaware, the same complaint was lodged against the
Victoria Secrets in our local mall. The management, was kind enough to
recognize the complaints, and the models now wear underwear that isn't
"sexually" suggestive. In other words they toned it down, kept the
suggestive style inside the stores, and everyone was happy.

Osprey is a f___ing liar: by "you guys" he means liberals, and what he
claims has never happened. In particular, I have never objected to
any of what Osprey claims, making his charge of hypocrisy a complete
and utter lie.
I really doubt if he can find even one incident of anyone objecting to
a family putting up a road-side memorial, or any objection to a
veteran's family putting a religious symbol at his/her grave.
Liberals would not object to a student voluntarily saying "God" in a
speech at school either, but would object to a public school
indoctrinating a kid in a particular religion, or forcing a kid to
read a prayer over a P.A. system.
Curiously, the only case I've heard of in which anyone objected to a
"cross" on a roadside memorial were some neocons who didn't like a
display of a number of crosses with a sign that said "Support the
troops". The neocons thought it was a political (and anti-war)
message. The diplay was put up in the East Bay (the area on the
opposite side of SF Bay from San Francisco), and as I recall, Cindy
Sheenan was one of the people involved in creating it.

Right, but lets see a "cross" on the side of a road set up as a
memorial, or a student say "God" in a speech at school, or a religious
symbol on the graves at a veteran cemetary, and you guys have a cow.
Don't tell me to lighten up hypocrite
Osprey is a f___ing liar: by "you guys" he means liberals, and what he
claims has never happened. In particular, I have never objected to
any of what Osprey claims, making his charge of hypocrisy a complete
and utter lie.
I really doubt if he can find even one incident of anyone objecting to
a family putting up a road-side memorial,

Liar - that site claims (whether true or not) that "All around Utah,
the state has erected religious memories by the sides of roads in
^^^^^
tribute to state police offices who have died in the line of
duty. American Atheists has filed a legal challenge to these crosses,
arguing that religious memorials on public property violate the
separation of church and state."
Now, as I said, "I really doubt if he can find even one incident of
anyone objecting to a family putting up a road-side memorial." Note
^^^^^^
the word "family". It is not a synonym for "state". We see road-side
memorials around here all the time, usually flowers although sometimes
crosses. They are put up by the family and friends of the deceased,
not by the government. Nobody complains about those. Why should
anyone complain?
BTW, when the city of San Jose commissioned a statue in a newly redone
downtown plaza, the sculptor created an image of Quetzalcoatl, an
Aztec deity. It was the righ-wing Christians who objected and sued,
claiming it was a religious display. The judge ruled that it was
merely cultural, not religious, due to there being no practicing
Aztecs as the Spanish had rubbed them all out.
The artist probably merely rolled his eyes, but he would have been
better off if the Christians had won - the local art critic thought
the statue looked more like something left by a passing dog, being too
heavy-looking and squat to represent the Aztec plumed-serpent god.
So, what were you saying about hypocrisy? :-) These Christians will
whine about not getting their religious displays on public property
while they sue to try to stop anything that they do not like. You
can't have your cake and eat it too, and that is what they seem to
want.
Now, go do some google searching on the other issues...
Instead, why don't you take a remedial course in English
comprehension, which you seem to so sorely lack?
