Who should you vote for if you're against privatisation and the Iraq
war?
Seumas Milne
Thursday April 7, 2005
The Guardian
Voters opposed to the occupation of Iraq, the galloping privatisation
of public services and the shameful inequality of Britain in 2005 - a
majority of the British people, according to opinion polls - face a
problem at next month's general election. In most constituencies, they
will have no one to vote for. That is because none of the three main
parties will be offering a meaningful alternative on what are, by any
reckoning, central issues in political and social life. But of course
it's not only the voters who have a problem. So does the government -
because the majority of those who are most angry about the war,
privatisation, inequality and attacks on civil liberties have in the
past been committed Labour voters. And polling evidence suggests that
millions of them could stay at home or switch to the Liberal Democrats
or a protest party as a result.

The film Downfall relies on memoirs written by Hitler's allies to
distance themselves from Nazism
David Cesarani and Peter Longerich
Thursday April 7, 2005
The Guardian
The film Downfall has received terrific reviews in this country and has
already been seen by four and a half million Germans. It has clearly
struck a chord with the popular mood in Germany and feelings about the
Nazi past.
This should come as no surprise. The brilliant portrayal of Hitler by
Bruno Ganz exposes him as a repellent human being devoid of concern
about the misery into which he led his people. The film thus panders to
the tendency of Germans to see themselves as victims of Nazism and war
rather than perpetrators.

Poorest nations lead global growth

Developing countries grew at their sharpest rate for three decades last
year, faster than wealthy nations, the World Bank said yesterday. It
warned, however, that wealthy nations were not increasing aid fast
enough to stamp out poverty.
Even sub-Saharan Africa, which includes some of the world's poorest
nations, became wealthier last year, helped by soaring commodity prices
- the region is rich in oil and metals.
Tony Blair said when he released his Commission for Africa report last
month that poverty on the continent was the "greatest tragedy of our
time". But he added the increasing number of democratic countries and
the decrease in conflicts meant this was a good time to stimulate
growth. The Bank noted in its report yesterday that such factors helped
to increase the gross domestic product of the sub-Saharan region last
year by 3.8%, compared with 2003.

07 April 2005
In a fortnight when two Arab footballers have kept Israel in World Cup
contention, an Arab schoolboy has beaten hundreds of Jewish children to
win a quiz focused on the history of Zionism.
Rami Wated, 12, an Arab Israeli from Jaffa, was a winning finalist in a
competition to answer questions mainly based on Tel Aviv street names
and their relevance to the history of Jewish nationalism.

The Terri Schiavo case has reinvigorated a drive by congressional
conservatives to discipline and curtail the power of federal judges,
just as Senate Republicans are trying to repel Democratic claims that
the GOP is extremist and overreaching in its bid to shape the federal
judiciary.
Survey Paints Portrait of Dean Supporters

Howard Dean's failed presidential campaign left behind a cadre of
political activists who now constitute the most liberal faction of the
Democratic Party and who believe the party should move to the left as
it tries to rebound from Sen. John F. Kerry's loss to President Bush,
according to a unique survey of Dean's followers.
Dean attracted an activist corps that is whiter, wealthier, better
educated and far more liberal and secular than Democrats generally or
the population at large, according to the Pew Research Center. But the
study found that Dean's followers were not, as some reports had
suggested, dominated by young people and that he had strong appeal
among voters ages 40 to 59.
