We do need a debate on abortion - not about legality or time limits but
about why so many are necessary
Madeleine Bunting
Monday April 11, 2005
The Guardian
It was the debate that didn't happen. The abortion issue reared its
head for a brief moment in the phoney pre-election period, prompting
horror and outrage at the prospect of American political religiosity in
the UK, before it was swiftly buried by nervous, evasive politicians.
The politicians were right - there is no evidence, apart from the
strenuous efforts of a small minority, that the British public want a
big row about abortion. The British have achieved a very typical kind
of pragmatic settlement on the issue: legalised abortion is the lesser
evil. They don't want to return to women dying in backstreet abortions
- but it's not an issue they want to talk or think about. Abortion
remains, as Ann Furedi of the British Pregnancy Advisory Service points
out, one of Britain's last taboos.

The fire that's smouldering under Bush

The Republicans are in trouble without an anointed successor
Peter Preston
Monday April 11, 2005
The Guardian
The most pulsating polls of the moment have nothing to do with the
Tories closing the gap or falling further behind - according to which
Sunday paper you're reading. Indeed, their findings have nothing
directly to do with Britain 2005 at all. (We'll do indirectly in a
moment.)
These are the polls that measure a re-elected George Bush's popularity,
and thus the "dividend" he intended to spend on "being Bush". Strange
news: there is no dividend. And George, at this point of the second
term, is the least popular president of the US since the second world
war.

Religion's Decline In Europe Among Biggest Challenges For Next Pontiff
By Keith B. Richburg, Page A15
MADRID -- For centuries, the Vatican considered Spain the most Catholic
country of Europe. The Spanish defeat of the Muslims at Granada in 1492
consolidated Roman Catholicism's hold on the continent, and the
Inquisition rooted out those who failed to adhere to the strict
Catholic line. Spain's conquest of the Americas extended the Vatican's
reach. And Spain gave birth to such pious religious orders as the
Dominicans, the Jesuits and Opus Dei.
