Can we fold the remains of the Ottoman empire into a new European
empire?
Timothy Garton Ash
Thursday April 14, 2005
The Guardian
How many years does it take to dismantle an empire? And how many wars?
In the case of the Ottoman empire, the answer would seem to be about
400 years and at least 20 wars, including the world war that began in
Sarajevo. And we may not have seen the last of them. According to a
recent survey, three out of every four Macedonians expect a new
military conflict in their country. So who's for another little Balkan
war?

The ricin ring that never was

Yesterday's trial collapse has exposed the deception behind attempts
to link al-Qaida to a 'poison attack' on London

Thursday April 14, 2005
The Guardian
Colin Powell does not need more humiliation over the manifold errors
in his February 2003 presentation to the UN. But yesterday a London
jury brought down another section of the case he made for war - that
Iraq and Osama bin Laden were supporting and directing terrorist
poison cells throughout Europe, including a London ricin ring.
Yesterday's verdicts on five defendants and the dropping of charges
against four others make clear there was no ricin ring. Nor did the
"ricin ring" make or have ricin. Not that the government shared that
news with us. Until today, the public record for the past three
fear-inducing years has been that ricin was found in the Wood Green
flat occupied by some of yesterday's acquitted defendants. It wasn't.

German film star Daniel Brühl has cornered the market in idealistic
anti-capitalists. But, as his new film opens in the UK, he tells
Stuart Jeffries he's been through his rebel phase - now he's
concentrating on not selling out commercially
Thursday April 14, 2005
The Guardian
German terrorism isn't what it used to be. Once it involved bombs,
shootouts, mailing bits of hostages to Frankfurt businessmen to get
them to pony up the dough. Today, if a new, purportedly hip German
film called The Edukators is anything to go by, it has become more
effete. The film's putatively radical protagonists break into rich
people's houses while they are out, pile the furniture in a heap and
leave slightly insulting notes telling the victims to mend their
materialistic ways. They don't steal anything, but drive off into the
night feeling pretty smug about themselves. This Milk Tray radicalism
may make Baader-Meinhof veterans giggle into their copies of Herbert
Marcuse's One Dimensional Man, but still.

Italian prime minister Silvio Berlusconi yesterday moved to blunt
criticism of his dual roles as premier and media mogul.
Fininvest, the company at the apex of his business empire, announced
it was reducing its holding in the Mediaset TV network to just over
34%.
JP Morgan had been put in charge of the sell-off of the 197m shares,
which took the form of an institutional placing.

US told to halt spending spree
Credit card excess means economic turbulence, warns IMF
http://www.guardian.co.uk/business/story/0,3604,1459078,00.html
Richard Adams in Washington
Thursday April 14, 2005
The Guardian
The International Monetary Fund told the United States to cut up its
credit cards yesterday, in a stark warning that the world's largest
economy needs to spend less to stave off potential turbulence.
"The United States needs to save more," said Raghu Rajan, the IMF's
chief economist, at the launch of the World Economic Outlook, the
IMF's twice-yearly report on the global economy.
According to the IMF report, international economic performance is
being dangerously unbalanced by the US's twin budget and trade
deficits sucking up a disproportionate share of world activity.
The news sent Mediaset's price tumbling by more than 4% to touch
€10.54 before recovering to close at €10.58 (£7.21). Traders said the
shares were initially placed at between €10.70 and €10.90.

Atlanta Olympics bomber enters guilty plea
http://news.independent.co.uk/world/americas/story.jsp?story=629214
By Kristen Wyatt in Atlanta
14 April 2005
A defiant anti-abortionist pleaded guilty yesterday to carrying out
the deadly bombing at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics and three other
attacks, saying he picked the Games to embarrass the US government in
front of the world "for its abominable sanctioning of abortion on
demand".
"Because I believe that abortion is murder, I also believe that force
is justified ... in an attempt to stop it," Eric Rudolph said in a
statement handed out by his lawyers after he entered his pleas in
back-to-back court appearances, first in Birmingham, Alabama, then in
Atlanta.

India opens rail link to Kashmir in bid to bring a sense of unity
http://news.independent.co.uk/world/asia/story.jsp?story=629163
By Justin Huggler in Delhi
14 April 2005
India has opened the first stage of a spectacular railway that will
connect Indian-administered Kashmir with the rest of the country.
When finished, the line will cross the vast barriers of the Himalayas
and the Pir Panjal mountains, include a tunnel six miles long through
the mountains, and a mile-long bridge 1,300ft high over Chenab river.
The first section, which does not even cross the higher mountains,
already includes 158 bridges and 20 tunnels.

Rep. Christopher Shays (Conn.), the only Republican in Congress to
call for Tom DeLay (R-Tex.) to resign as House majority leader, walked
in late to a committee meeting yesterday and got the cold shoulder
from a longtime colleague, Rep. Dan Burton (R-Ind.). When Burton
barely acknowledged Shays, Shays put a hand on Burton's and inquired,
"Dan, is everything okay?"
