According to the Secular Coalition for America (www.secular.org):
On Monday, March 12, we'll announce the name of the first openly
nontheistic member of Congress.
I'm betting on Mazie Hirono, the non-practicing Buddhist from Hawaii.

I hate to be a bit picky, but isn't a non-practising buddhist still a
theist? Unless they have declared themselves to be atheist of course.

Depends on the kind of Buddhism.

Depends on the kind of Buddhism.

I presume buddhism to be theistic, in the same way you might say (insert
chosen religion) is. How is a theistic belief atheist?

Oh, good, you looked it up. So you can check my work.
Buddha did not teach and did not believe in a godhead. Indeed, he rejected
the religions of his day that worshipped gods (after trying a number of
them). What he taught we might call a philosophy, but it was unlike Western
philosophy, in that it was more about a way of being. There is really
nothing inherently supernatural about it, but sometimes it is expressed in
figures of speech, which taken literally seem to be saying something about
the supernatural.
Among the followers of Buddha there was considerable difficulty. You see,
you can tell people what to do, and some of them will do it. You can tell
people what to think, and some of them will think it. But how do you tell
people how to be?
Well, you pretty much cannot. You can give people good advice, you can give
them clues, maybe a gentle nudge in the right direction, but basically, what
they will be is up to them; some of them will get it, most of them will not.
So what to do with the most who will not get it? This sort of consideration
led some Buddhists to decide that the kindest thing to do would be to create
a low road. And in the low road, Buddha became a part of something like a
god, although not much in the mold of Middle Eastern gods.
Or in other words, theistic Buddhism is Buddhism Lite.

Because some Buddhists are theistic and others are not.

My near-seamless ignorance of Buddhism aside, I had
the impression that the Buddha did not deny
any of the vast panolpy of Hindu gods and goddesses;
they were simply irrelevant to his teachings, which
more or less boiled down to "it's up to you to get
yourself out of this mess".

If true, I would expect a hit squad from Focus on the Family to attend
and assassinate the poor unfortunate as soon as the words were spoken.
