Several decades ago, Montana's per capita GDP was ranked amongst the
top ten. Today is the 2nd poorest state.

Eh, not quite. I do not know what stats Collapse uses (the one I have
are from the 2000 Census), but the ones I have rank still Montana as
46th overall in per capita. Montana is 48th in SGP. Still pretty
goddamned poor, however you look at it.

Well done.
I concede to you on this account (market value $0.00) for doing due
dilegence on thing that I should have done on my part. You are indeed
correct that Montana is ranked 46th rather than 49th (as validated by
www.bea.doc.gov) I reread Jared Diamond and he was making the calim,
but rather he was quoting from a Montana resident. Nonethless, it is a
good catch.
But back to my original point. In some ways there is some parallell
between Montana ad Saudi Arabia. Three decades ago the Saudis had one
of the highest per capita GDPs in the world, and now the country is a
complete economic basketcase for the same reason- it is an extraction
economy that offered little else.
Now Montana is not the only mining states in the west. Why is San
Francisco, also originally a mining town, now an economic powerhouse
but not Bitteroot Valley? Why is a vibrant high tech city in Boulder,
Colorado but not big sky libertarian Montana? Obviously there are
geographical factors outside anyone's control, but I would argue that
governance and institutions also matter.

Aren't these the same economic conditions that have always been
a precursor to the rise and resurgence in KKK membership? Small
wonder people are joining Shrub's crusade.
