More poetry (on topic) - "Book of Spells" & "Alice" |
Here I go again. Two more poems that are on-topic for this group.
:-) Unlike an earlier incarnation of mine, I invite and welcome your
critiques as I endeavor to improve my poetic skills. The first poem
is probably not yet in its final form. I feel like there's something
about it that's just not _quite_ "in place" yet, but I can't put my
finger on what exactly that would be. Maybe some criticism will help
me figure it out? :-?
Anyway, if you actually read this, merci. :-)
"Book of Spells"
©2005 Bill Shroyer
Once she read from a book of spells
that told the whole world how to live.
So many things the book foretells,
so much advice it has to give.
Now she sighs to scatter around
the lingering dross in her head.
Blessings she once thought she had found,
Chats that she once had with the dead.
The book - she never could forget
the day that its words turned blank -
a cancer causing cigarette
with freedoms so heavy, it sank.
Erstwhile she sought above, below,
to answer the questions that kill.
But in the end, no one could know.
Unto this day, no one knows still.
Castles of sand, kingdoms in air,
eternal retreats on the clouds.
Answers to nothing, joyous despair -
with gifts like these, the book abounds.
To build truth from lies, such is worse
than oh so many ancient hells.
To see fools as wise - that's the curse
of the mediaeval book of spells.
"Alice"
©2005 Bill Shroyer
Alice, she touches down on the world of Make-Believe.
Quickly she looks around for those golden paved streets.
Duly she kneels before the only hope that she knows
as she calls out once more to some nomadic old ghost.
They read from old pages of angels dancing on pins.
They see pixies and sages as the Cheshire cat grins.
What of Little Boy Blue or the three witches who spoke?
And Alice, where were you when the looking glass broke?
Selling apples of poison to maidens in distress?
Or saving Lost Boys in Never Neverland, I guess...

Well, thank you very much gentlemen. Even if it doesn't make it all
the way, I am honored just to have been given a chance! ;-)
