More Straight Eye for the Queer Newspaper |
A few more interesting stories from the gay press not covered by mainstream
media.
KANSAS: Kansas must maintain it's sodomy laws so as to protect citizens
from bestiality marriages, paedophilia and incest, according to the state's
Attorney General Phiel Kline. Kline made his outburst during the trial of
18 year old Mathew Limon, who has been convicted of having oral sex with an
under age male and could face 17 years in prison. Limon's appeal case is
being supported by the ACLU, who says that his sentence would be just one
and a half years if he had full sex with an underage female. Kline says the
ACLU is looking to pave the way for widespread immorality. If Limon's
sentence were reduced, Kline claims, there would be nothing to stop multiple
partner marriages, marriages to animals, paedophilia and incest. ACLU
condemned Kline's outburst and an example of prejudice and discrimination.
"Laws that punish lesbian, gay and bisexual people far more harshly than
heterosexuals for the same thing are simply discriminatory and wrong and we
hope that the Court of Appeals will agree" said ACLU spokesperson *****
Kurtenbach.
KABUL: A British Army corporal performing peace keeping duties shot a
colleague 10 times with an assault rifle in August, after he took offence to
gay taunts, an inquest has heard. The corporal, part of a force sent to
Afghanistan's Kabul airport, then hot himself in the head. Corporal John
Gregory had been fighting with Sergeant Robert Busuttil over gay insults at
a barbeque for Gregory, who was due to leave the force the next day.
INDIA: The Indian Government has come under attack from gay rights groups
over it's refusal to decriminalise homosexuality. Last week the government
told it's courts that it had no intention to ditch section 377 of the Penal
Code, which says that gay men can face up to 10 years in prison. It added
that homosexuality was against the religious beliefs of the majority of the
country and therefore shouldn't be legalised.
PENNSYLVANIA: Police officers in a Pennsylvanian town are responsible for
the suicide of a gay teen, after they threaten to tell his family about his
sexuality, a court has ruled. Marcus Wayman, 18, shot himself in the head
after his car was stopped by police, who questioned him and his 17 year old
friend before discovering he was gay. They took the pair to the Minersville
station and read to them from the Bible, before threatening to call the
boy's grandfather and tell him he was gay. Madonna Sterling, Wayman's
mother, has now successfully sued the officers for $100 000, despite their
claim that privacy rights do not apply to gays and lesbians. The ACLU had
claimed that the success of this case has affected the lives of other gay
teens. They are now supporting a 14 year old boy in Arkansas, who was outed
by his school and forced to read from the Bible. He was also punished for
talking about his sexuality and then punished further for talking about his
punishment.
GREAT BRITAIN: Australian born human rights activist Peter Tatchell has
urged police to arrest reggae singers Beenie Man, Bounty Killer and Elephant
Man for allegedly inciting violence against gays and lesbians. The singers,
all nominated for Best Reggae Act at the Music of Black Origin (MOBO) awards
in Britain, have all produced records that call for the killing of gay men
and lesbians. "The nominations are tantamount to rewarding bigotry" said
Tatchell. "It's the equivalent of the Brit Awards nominating a racist
entertainer who incites the killing of black people. The MOBO organisers
should withdraw these nominations immediately and apologise to the gay
community for collusion with these entertainer's homophobic abuse and
threats." Tatchell has sent a dossier of lyrics to police in an attempt to
move towards the prosecution of Jamaican stars.
AUSTRALIA: A campaign of harassment against a gay man whose neighbours saw
police confiscate his computer has been blamed on the possibly deliberate
indiscretion of police officers. The 35 year old gay man said his home had
been vandalised several times since police confiscated his computer in a
raid connected to the hunt for an extortionist. The computer has since been
returned and no charges laid. "Neighbours have smashed my letterbox and
front window. I've been spat on, assaulted and called a paedophile, all
because they saw police officers turn up and take my computer away. It's
made them jump to conclusions. I now have to move." "I believe the officers
who picked up the computer were homophobic, I've also made a complaint to
police about their siren going off after they assured me they would be
discrete. When they searched the house they laughed at my dildoes and
pictures of me in drag. These are not uncommon things for gay men to have
in their homes." Police GLBT liaison officers have begun an inquiry into
the officers actions.

Apparently we need to go over this one again:
Do *Not* taunt people holding assault rifles!

That's assuming intelligence not in evidence.
