More stuff from Huygens |
More pics, including a 360 degree panorama, to be found at
http://saturn.esa.int/
Also, a recording from the on-board microphone during the descent is at
http://esamultimedia.esa.int/images/huygens_alien_winds_descent.mp3
Regretably, it's just wind noise, with no sounds of our little probe
engaging in a dogfight with the Titan Interceptors. Still, you can't have
everything.

So very, very cool.

Isn't this the first time human ears have heard sounds from another
planet? I can't recall any other. Shouldn't people, like, be
_noticing_ this or something? I mean more than just us nerdy types.
:-?

Didn't the rovers have microphones?

The rovers did not. The Beagle lander had a microphone, but it
crashed and was never heard from.

Ah, that's what I was thinking of, thanks.

I don't recall, but given that Mars's atmosphere is only about 9 millibars,
maybe they didn't bother.
Titan's atmosphere is actually thicker than ours at 1500 millibars, so that
would carry sound.

No. The polar lander did, but it crashed w/o broadcasting any sound.

It's also interesting that the polar lander was also a European
mission. What is about the EU missions that they want to *hear* the
place, whereas USians only want to see the place.
