I hear what you're saying, but these kids need to realize that their
door-to-door solicitation of converts is arrogant and rude, by its very
nature, even if they are personally nice people. Furthermore, they're
the ones bringing the subject up, so it's their own fault if their
feelings get hurt when people criticize their religion. Besides, if it's
their right to try to convert me, I might as well get a crack at
converting them too.

I used to be Mormon before I became an atheist.
Their religion is ***** but they are really nice people. My brother
was a mormon missionary. Just politely tell them you are not interested
and to not come back. They'll leave you alone.
Get a "no soliciting" sign for your door. This will stop new
missionaries from coming...they change out every few months so the new
ones might not know about you.

That's their problem, not ours.

Your first message in a.a. said that you'd "come to reason" just a few
years ago, so you will need to use your imagination a little. Think
about what it's like to hear every day of your life that you're not to
be trusted because you're a pathetic, low-life hedonist, a self-obsessed
potential master criminal who's about to explode in an orgy of crime
because there's nothing to keep you in check. Or that you're a demonic
devil-worshipping scum bag who deserves to burn in hell for eternity.
Or, and this is from the "nice" ones, that you're probably OK at heart
but you deserve pity because you're blind to the Truth. That gets
annoying after the first couple of years.
Granted there are some posters to a.a. who are nasty for the sake of
being nasty, and I kill file them as soon as they show their true
colors, but most of the regulars are just fed up with theists in general
and Christians in particular. They can't just explode in the face of
some stranger on the street (at least I hope they don't), so they
release the anger and the frustration online in an area that often
serves as a support group.
Try using your natural empathy a little...You don't HAVE to be a
***** at EVERY given fucking chance.
It's not much of an explanation, but I hope you begin to see why it
would be useful to feel a little empathy when reading the posts in a.a.
Some people feel they do have to be a ***** at every turn because when
it comes to religion, many religions would just as soon annihilate
atheists as tolerate us.

It's not an explanation at all..it's an excuse to take your LEGIT anger
that you have at CERTAIN religious people and spout off to 19 year old
boys who were raised a certain way and are only doing what they were
raised to do. Spout off to someone who might actually listen to you.
Spout off to people who are mildly religious for a variety of reasons
that are deeply personal.
All because someone ELSE pissed you off.
This is why people should treat every person as an idividual and not
pile OUR baggage on them. This goes for the crazy nutso religious
people too.

I haven't claimed to know anything about you. I simply pointed out that
that not having known yourself to be atheist as long as most of the
regulars in a.a. you wouldn't have been seeing or hearing things the
same way as they do, i.e. as the target.
I live in a town that is 90%

You are displaying a great deal of angry bitterness right now, but
please don't let that stop a good rant.

Use the third person, please. You're addressing quite possibly the
one regular who's never sworn at another person, online or even in real
life.
This is why people should treat every person as an idividual and not
pile OUR baggage on them. This goes for the crazy nutso religious
people too.
You're not thinking clearly. When you write, "... this place is just
as wacky as some fundie churches sometimes..." you yourself were, in
fact, lumping together everyone who posts to a.a. and not regarding us
as individuals. Clearly in that instance you thought such a generality
was justified, just as our angry regulars feel justified in lashing out
at one religious person as a representative of them all.

hatred of street preachers that go back a long, long, way. Mostly they
just get humiliated though
