Most Americans Agree with Evolution |
Good News, a slight majority (51%) of Americans accept evolution. Bad
news, 42% still don't.
---
Angus Reid Global Scan : Polls & Research
Most Americans Agree with Evolution
September 1, 2006
- More adults in the United States believe the theory of evolution is
correct, according to a poll by the Pew Research Center for the People
and the Press. 51 per cent of respondents think that humans and other
living things evolved over time, while 42 per cent say they existed in
their present form since the beginning of time.
Charles Darwins "The Origin of Species" was first published in 1859. The
book details the British naturalists theory that all organisms gradually
evolve through the process of natural selection. Darwins views were
antagonistic to creationism, the belief that a more powerful being or a
deity created life.
In the United States, the debate on the topic accelerated after the 1925
Scopes trial, which tested a law that banned the teaching of evolution
in Tennessee public schools. In 2004, Georgias Cobb County was at the
centre of a controversy on whether science textbooks that explain
evolutionary theory should include disclaimer stickers.
The theory of intelligent design suggests certain biological mechanisms
are too complex to have developed without the involvement of a powerful
force or intelligent being.
Last month, Austrian cardinal Christoph Schoenborn said the two views
are not necessarily incompatible, declaring, "There is no conflict
between science and religion, but a debate between a materialist
interpretation of the results of science and a metaphysical
philosophical interpretation. (...) The possibility that the Creator
used evolution as a tool is completely acceptable for the Catholic
faith."

Maybe that's why most of the same people don't like when black and
white people have kids together and they come out as something in
between. Sorta throws a wrench in the idea that we were all born this
way. I wonder how they explain the existence of different ethnicities
at all, or why asian people dont have white or black babies etc.

have monkeys?", or "Nobody ever saw a dog turn into a cat."

Maybe that's why most of the same people don't like when black
and
white people have kids together and they come out as something
in
between. Sorta throws a wrench in the idea that we were all born
this
way. I wonder how they explain the existence of different
ethnicities
at all, or why asian people dont have white or black babies etc.
Reminds me of some of the dumb arguments that some of the
creationist
trolls use here like"If man descended from monkeys, how come we
still
have monkeys?",
Yeah, how come?
I tried to ask a monkey once, but he got mad and started flinging
feces
at me. I think he was a creationist.
or "Nobody ever saw a dog turn into a cat."
I never thought of that before.
No-one has ever seen that.
I guess there must be a solitary male Jewish invisible God after
all.
It just makes so much logical sense!
Hallelujah! Science has proven the existence of the big guy in the
sky!
Don't go off half-cocked just yet!
Hey! It may be old, but it's still in one piece!
You have yet to establish with your new-fangled science thingy whether
he is caucasoid, mongoloid, negroid, godoid, or droidoid.
Definitely android. Put together from parts of an old washing machine
and a 1930s era tube radio.
Wow! I didn't know that Mr. Spock was the creator's
creator!
Isn't that explanation the most logical?
But that would make Gene Roddeberry God. I wonder
when he's coming back. Maybe there are more clues
hidden in "City On The Edge of Forever"? Or would that
mean that Harlan Ellison is God? Wow! All those atheist
gods!
Heh! Roddenberry certainly belongs in a pantheon somewhere. I miss those
shows. I can't even find reruns on TV anymore.
I need to get back to reading more science fiction. One would think
that now that I am retired my reading would turn to lighter subjects,
but I find myself reading more science books than ever. I just finished
one called "Genesis" by Robert Hazen on the origin of life. It
summarizes pretty much what is known about the subject through 2005. It
is written in a style such that one doesn't not need an extensive
science education to appreciate it. A good read for those interested.
I'm now reading a book Robert Paxton on the history of Fascism, a word
which everyone is throwing around these days, but everyone seems to have
his/her own meaning for it. When I get done, time to hit the bookstore
again.

If I may; baen.com click on 'free library' 'authors' 'eric flint'
and d/l 1932 and 1933.

Thanks Stoney! Shouldn't that be 1632 and 1633? They look interesting.
I'll download them and read them when I get a chance.

I'm going to be purchasing them in paperback to support both the author

I think you'd like 'Slepinir' by Linda Evans as well. I purchased a
copy of that book.

They are excellent, I also recommend the "Grantville Gazette" series as well,
short stories and factual essays related to the above 1632 series.
You did mean to type "1632" and "1633" didn't you, Stoney?

Many of 'em explain it by claiming that dark skin is a curse from

consider a dark tan as being completely different from being naturally
dark-skinned.
