Its days are numbered, but the Mount Soledad cross will remain at its
current location for Thursday's Veterans Day observances probably for the
last time.
A committee is working on plans for its removal after a voter referendum
to try to keep it in place failed Tuesday.
A spokeswoman for the Mount Soledad Memorial Association that erected, at
the cross's base, marble walls bearing plaques honoring veterans, says a
national competition is planned to create a suitable substitute for the
cross.
Meanwhile, this Veterans Day, a special plaque approved by Nancy Reagan
and honoring the late Ronald Reagan, will be presented on her behalf to
Peter Hannaford, a longtime Reagan adviser. Free Jelly Belly candies also
will be distributed in memory of Reagan's passion for jelly beans. When
he was in office, the candy manufacturer created a blueberry flavor so he
could snack on red, white and blue Jelly Bellys.
