My bet for the next pope |
Cardinal Juan Luis Cipriani of Lima, Peru. He is a high ranking official
in the arch-conservative Catholic group Opus Dei and the only OD
cardinal.
Why, you may ask? JP II made Opus Dei a "personal prelature", the very
first in the Catholic Church. In other words, OD was given unprecedented
power to govern its internal affairs outside of the normal church
hierarchy; the head of the order is answerable only to the Pope.
Likewise, the founder of OD, Jose-Maria Escriva de Balaguer, was
beatified by JP II in 1992, less than 17 years after he died. With the
late pope having been so enamored with OD, and with every voting
cardinal having been appointed by JP II, I don't think it entirely
unlikely that the next Bishop of Rome will come from Peru.

I seriously think we should sneak an atheist Pope in. Think of all the
good that someone who had that kind of power and realistic beliefs could
do.
Anyone want the job?

I do. If he is not European, or at least Occidental, I'll eat my pope
hat. Rome threw in with Hitler's Germany remember.
