April 19 - At first there was a brief, giddy moment as the white smoke
rose and the bells rang out. Then, many of the faces in the crowd at
St. Peter's Square fell. A young Italian man who had been shouting,
"Glory to God!'' and "What joy! What joy!'' went perfectly
silent. Two Irish priests who had been hooting and rooting for a Latin
American pope who would address global poverty murmured their approval
with marked restraint.
