"My Religious Rights are being Trampled!" |
"Those who oppose a short, decent, prayer at a high school sporting
event have gone too far. No one is trying to force worship on anyone.
Ignore the prayer if you wish...it's a free country. However, the
Constitution which you claim to revere so much also says "...or the
free exercise thereof." Seems you want to ignore that. My religious
freedoms are under attack by a tiny number of people who are offended
by the fact that this is a Christian nation and always has been."
Now how would you resond to the above rant from a friend who has fallen
under the Rush Limbaugh trance? How many "religious rights" does he
have and how many are being "trampled?"

Just explain to him that he has just argued that you have the _right_ to
conduct a satanic ritual next to him while he prays. And proceed to do so.

Matthew 5
5 "And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are: for
they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the
streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, They have
their reward.
6 "But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast
shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father
which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly.
As christians, they only have the right to follow
the commands of Jesus.
They do not have any right to force prayer on
anybody else, nor to do in the name of Jesus
or god something Jesus has forbidden.
To demand public prayer is insolence and offends
non-Christians, non-religious persons and the true
Christians.
Only arrogant, faux christians would object.

1. He's a "friend"? Why?
2. Quote Matthew chapter 6:5-6 and tell him only show-offs pray
in public. From the bi(b)le (aka the book o'blood):

You know this quote rolls off these people like water off a duck. They
don't give a crap what Jesus said. Rush didn't say it. Dubya didn't say
it. So it doesn't matter. Jesus was probably just having an off day
when he said that and later changed his mind.
It does occur to me that such a prayer before school or a game is not
in itself going to indoctrinate anyone, but it seems to me to be a
symbol, like a salute to Caesar. A declaration of loyalty and
allegiance by the authorities in charge, to this belief system.

Which is against the US Constitution. The US is *not* a 'Christian
Nation.' It is, in the main, a nation of Christians. There's an
important difference.

Yes, they are. When a state-run school uses its PA system to lead a
captive audience in prayer, it is forcing worship on those who don't
believe. If you want to pray--fine. But do as jesus said and don't
pray loudly in the open as the hypocrites do.
That's how you should respond. It will really ***** off your friend to

Depends on who's doing the praying. If this is an
individual player sitting on a bench, that's one thing.
If this is a coach-led thing, one is entering into a gray
area. If the stadium announcer announces a stadium-wide
prayer, that's a clear violation, but I don't know
regarding an otherwise noncommittal "minute of silence".
(The committed "minute of silence" is occasionally used
on the anniversary of a great tragedy, such as the death
of a coaching great or events such as the toppling of the

At least one student has been rebuffed when offering to pray

I agree, you can't change people once they succumb to the 'mind

absolutely fed up with them thinking every little thing having

also disgusted me watching one force it on his three little kids.

Oh, it's just a harmless little prayer, and 99.99% of the audience
likes to hear it or doesn't care. Why should there be a tyranny of the

Here's a link to one of my favorite essays. The last paragraph, quoted
below, is especially stirring: http://www.christianitymeme.org/tub.html
From the time of the Peasants' Rebellion on, all true democratic
movements have been branded as anti-religious. In part this has been an
effort to discredit them, and in part it has been a perception that
democracy is essentially antiauthoritarian--that it not only demands the
right but imposes the responsibility of thinking for ourselves. And
belief is the antithesis to thinking. A refusal to come to an
unjustified conclusion is an element of an honest man's religion. To him
the call to blind faith is really a call to barbarism and slavery. In
being asked to believe without evidence, he is being asked to abdicate
his integrity. Freedom of speech and freedom of action are meaningless
without freedom to think. And there is no freedom of thought without
doubt. The civilized man has a moral obligation to be skeptical, to
demand the credentials of all statements that claim to be facts. An
honorable man will not be bullied by a hypothesis. For in the last
analysis all tyranny rests on fraud, on getting someone to accept false
assumptions, and any man who for one moment abandons or suspends the
questioning spirit has for that moment betrayed humanity.

Oh, it's just a harmless little prayer, and 99.99% of the audience
likes to hear it or doesn't care. Why should there be a tyranny of the
0.01% minority? Are the courts on thin ice to say that such a prayer is
an "establishment" of religion?
Ok, but how do you counter the arguments that "majority should rule"
and that religion is "just one more bit of product advertising?"
This "majority rule" business is *****, or, to put it more
charitably, a fantasy of both the right AND the left. The U.S.
Constitution exists primarily to enumerate and protect the rights of
that 0.01% minority. The "majority" needs no such protection. Just
because your friend heard different on talk radio, or on Democratic
Underground, doesn't make it so.

You might have heard of the US Constitution.
Ignore the prayer if you wish...it's a free country. However, the
Constitution which you claim to revere so much also says "...or
the free exercise thereof." Seems you want to ignore that. My
religious freedoms are under attack by a tiny number of people
who are offended by the fact that this is a Christian nation and
always has been."
No it's not, it's an everything nation.
Ok, but how do you counter the arguments that "majority should rule"

The Constitution doesn't allow mob rule. (Whether the Constitution is
enforced is something else) The latter is false witness.
Now how would you resond to the above rant from a friend who
has fallen under the Rush Limbaugh trance? How many
"religious rights" does he have and how many are being
"trampled?"
Trade him in for a friend that is not faulty.
I agree, you can't change people once they succumb to the 'mind
virus'. I have lost many friends to this. I get to a point where I'm
absolutely fed up with them thinking every little thing having
anything to do with science is some sort of lie or conspiracy. It
also disgusted me watching one force it on his three little kids.
Every cartoon dvd, every coloring book, every puzzle. I consider that
to be abusive to their minds. So I split, for good. But not without
reminding him to think twice about science the next time he took his
insulin shot for diabetes.
If they'd rather have imaginary friends than real ones, so be it.
Not everybody is like that, however becoming fewer it seems. Also
watch out for the 'sleepers', they never want to discuss it, then
wham, you got a borg on your hands.
My friend used to be rational, but years of Rush Limbaugh and/or
parenthood seem to have taken their toll. I would like to find and read
some well written and researched essays which counter the Limbaugh
mindset.

Would it be okay with Rush if I got on the loudspeaker at a sporting
event and prayed to be delivered from the liars and deceivers who
claimed that a God, Heaven and Hell exists?

Offer the Satanist test. Would this person feel the same way if the
teacher/coach offered a prayer to Satan?

What I would like to see is a situation wherein someone actually offers up a
prayer to Satan or gives thanks to Satan for something in front of a nominally
christian audience.
It would most likely start a riot.

Back a number of years ago, a friend of mine had a son who was about
to graduate from public high school. There was a lot of pressure on
the school board to allow prayers at the graduation ceremony. My
friend's son was class valedictorian and said that if prayers were
allowed, he would lead one to Satan.
Amazing how fast they started demanding no prayers.

Nobody is being prevented from praying at a high school sporting event.
They just can't do it over the PA system.
