MyDoom Spawns More Potent Variant |
Do fuckwits still open email attachments? Do they? With no anti-virus
program? Do they open a ZIP file which contains test.pif and actually open
that *****?
i got several copies already. it got binned. unopened. obviously.
the real problem here is not the fucking virus. it's the fuckheads who still
open attachments which contain executables.
those people are the real fucking problem. get them off the Internet and the
problem goes away.
shoot them. annihilate. eradicate. nuke. kill. kill. kill.
for *****'s sakes.
it's the only way to be sure.

MyDoom Spawns More Potent Variant
By Michelle Delio | Also by this reporter Page 1 of 1
12:16 PM Jan. 28, 2004 PT
A new, nastier variant of the MyDoom worm has been released and is beginning
to spread across the Internet, according to antivirus experts.
Computers infected with MyDoom.B will launch a 12-day denial-of-service
attack on Microsoft.com beginning Feb. 1. They will also launch a separate
attack on the SCO Group's website on the same date, just as the original
version of the worm is coded to do.
MyDoom.B also alters system files in order to block infected computers from
accessing a list of 65 websites, most of them belonging to antivirus
vendors, in an apparent attempt to stymie users attempting to download
antivirus application updates or information.
The worm's predecessor swept through inboxes earlier this week and was
quickly dubbed the most virulent e-mail worm of all time by e-mail-filtering
company MessageLabs.
Antivirus experts said they believe computers that are infected with
MyDoom.A are probably being used to send out e-mails containing copies of
the new variant. Infected computers have a backdoor in their systems that
allows malicious hackers to remotely access and control infected machines.
"These infected computers may have received a command to send out copies of
MyDoom.B. Therefore, the computer community may be facing a much more
serious outbreak than the one caused by MyDoom.A on Tuesday," said Denis
Zenkin, head of corporate communications for Kaspersky Labs, a Moscow-based
antivirus firm.
The new version of MyDoom's programming code also contains a text string
that is presumably a message from the virus' creator: "sync-1.01; andy; I'm
just doing my job, nothing personal, sorry."
A two-pronged denial-of-service attack on both Microsoft and SCO could
affect more than just the two companies. According to Internet-monitoring
firm Keynote, overall Internet performance speed had dipped to 8 percent to
10 percent slower than normal on Tuesday, when MyDoom.A was at its peak.
Keynote's analysis stated that the slowdown was not a significant change and
would not be detectable by the everyday user. The slowdown may have been
caused by slight traffic increases due to the worm's propagation through
e-mail, downloads of updated virus-detection files for corporate and home
users, and other related Internet traffic.
But when MyDoom, versions A and B, commences its expected 12-day
denial-of-service attacks against Microsoft and SCO on Super Bowl Sunday,
there could be a noticeable impact on overall Internet performance, Keynote
analysts warned. Besides hoping that the majority of infected users purge
their machine of MyDoom, there is little that either Microsoft or SCO can do
to avoid the attacks, which are intended to overwhelm their servers.
Starting Feb. 1, if all goes as the virus writer planned, connection
requests to the front page of both companies' websites will come roughly
every second from each of the estimated thousands of machines that are now
infected.
Antivirus companies Sophos and F-Secure have released free tools to purge
MyDoom.A from infected computers. Tools to clean MyDoom.B from machines will
be released shortly.
MyDoom affects only computers running the Windows operating system. It
arrives as an e-mail attachment with one of seven subject lines, including
"Test," "Hi" or "Mail Transaction Failed." Users who click on the attachment
activate the worm.
When executed, the virus first opens up Windows' Notepad and fills it with
garbage data. The virus then scours the computer for e-mail addresses, and
e-mails itself to a random selection of those addresses.
The virus then looks for the file-sharing application Kazaa on the infected
hard drive. If that application is found, MyDoom will copy itself to the
folder in which Kazaa users store files that they want to share. The virus
disguises itself as various programs that would allow users to activate or
hack various applications, including Microsoft Office.

Some Mormons practice polygamy in Utah. It isn't legal but it sounds
like a lot of fun. My only problem with polygamy is that I've been
told that when large numbers of females live together their menstrual
cycles synchronize. I don't think I could handle nine wives with PMS
at the same time.

It's hard to keep track of what is practised in each State. I was just
taking a different bent :-)
Some Mormons practice polygamy in Utah. It isn't legal but it sounds
like a lot of fun.
Isn't that what the original founder of the Mormon church believed and
practised - whatsisface Smith? Hell, any cult leader can make up an excuse
to ***** several women at once.
My only problem with polygamy is that I've been
told that when large numbers of females live together their menstrual
cycles synchronize. I don't think I could handle nine wives with PMS
at the same time.
It's true - it does happen.......

the real problem here is not the fucking virus. it's the fuckheads
who still open attachments which contain executables.
Did you know that Microsoft Exchange and Outlook when first installed
are configured to automatically open attachments? I believe they
also have preview turned on. Thus they are preconfigured to not
only open incoming email but execute the attachments.
Outlook doesn't come configured to open attachments by default or with
the preview turned on. You should probably have some sort of idea
what the hell you are talking about before you say it.
Outlook XP and Outlook 2003 won't even allow you to access a dangerous
attachment. They strip them out by default. Just try and send
someone running Outlook a .exe file or a .scr file and see if they
even can access it. I've been using Outlook for many years and have
zero problems with it and have had zero virus problems although I've
been sent a lot of viruses. Coupling it with Norton System Works Pro
keeps everything out of my computers.
XP stops you opening _any_ attachments at all when first installed. I had
to switch off the security on it just so I could open a bloody Word file.
