Do fuckwits still open email attachments? Do they? With no anti-virus
program? Do they open a ZIP file which contains test.pif and actually open
that *****?
i got several copies already. it got binned. unopened. obviously.
the real problem here is not the fucking virus. it's the fuckheads who still
open attachments which contain executables.
those people are the real fucking problem. get them off the Internet and the
problem goes away.
shoot them. annihilate. eradicate. nuke. kill. kill. kill.

MyDoom Spawns More Potent Variant
By Michelle Delio | Also by this reporter Page 1 of 1
12:16 PM Jan. 28, 2004 PT
A new, nastier variant of the MyDoom worm has been released and is beginning
to spread across the Internet, according to antivirus experts.
Computers infected with MyDoom.B will launch a 12-day denial-of-service
attack on Microsoft.com beginning Feb. 1. They will also launch a separate
attack on the SCO Group's website on the same date, just as the original
version of the worm is coded to do.
MyDoom.B also alters system files in order to block infected computers from
accessing a list of 65 websites, most of them belonging to antivirus
vendors, in an apparent attempt to stymie users attempting to download
antivirus application updates or information.
The worm's predecessor swept through inboxes earlier this week and was
quickly dubbed the most virulent e-mail worm of all time by e-mail-filtering
company MessageLabs.
Antivirus experts said they believe computers that are infected with
MyDoom.A are probably being used to send out e-mails containing copies of
the new variant. Infected computers have a backdoor in their systems that
allows malicious hackers to remotely access and control infected machines.
"These infected computers may have received a command to send out copies of
MyDoom.B. Therefore, the computer community may be facing a much more
serious outbreak than the one caused by MyDoom.A on Tuesday," said Denis
Zenkin, head of corporate communications for Kaspersky Labs, a Moscow-based
antivirus firm.
The new version of MyDoom's programming code also contains a text string
that is presumably a message from the virus' creator: "sync-1.01; andy; I'm
just doing my job, nothing personal, sorry."
A two-pronged denial-of-service attack on both Microsoft and SCO could
affect more than just the two companies. According to Internet-monitoring
firm Keynote, overall Internet performance speed had dipped to 8 percent to
10 percent slower than normal on Tuesday, when MyDoom.A was at its peak.
Keynote's analysis stated that the slowdown was not a significant change and
would not be detectable by the everyday user. The slowdown may have been
caused by slight traffic increases due to the worm's propagation through
e-mail, downloads of updated virus-detection files for corporate and home
users, and other related Internet traffic.
But when MyDoom, versions A and B, commences its expected 12-day
denial-of-service attacks against Microsoft and SCO on Super Bowl Sunday,
there could be a noticeable impact on overall Internet performance, Keynote
analysts warned. Besides hoping that the majority of infected users purge
their machine of MyDoom, there is little that either Microsoft or SCO can do
to avoid the attacks, which are intended to overwhelm their servers.
Starting Feb. 1, if all goes as the virus writer planned, connection
requests to the front page of both companies' websites will come roughly
every second from each of the estimated thousands of machines that are now
infected.
Antivirus companies Sophos and F-Secure have released free tools to purge
MyDoom.A from infected computers. Tools to clean MyDoom.B from machines will
be released shortly.
MyDoom affects only computers running the Windows operating system. It
arrives as an e-mail attachment with one of seven subject lines, including
"Test," "Hi" or "Mail Transaction Failed." Users who click on the attachment
activate the worm.
When executed, the virus first opens up Windows' Notepad and fills it with
garbage data. The virus then scours the computer for e-mail addresses, and
e-mails itself to a random selection of those addresses.
The virus then looks for the file-sharing application Kazaa on the infected
hard drive. If that application is found, MyDoom will copy itself to the
folder in which Kazaa users store files that they want to share. The virus
disguises itself as various programs that would allow users to activate or
hack various applications, including Microsoft Office.

the real problem here is not the fucking virus. it's the fuckheads
who
still open attachments which contain executables.
Did you know that Microsoft Exchange and Outlook when first installed
are configured to automatically open attachments? I believe they
also
have preview turned on. Thus they are preconfigured to not only
open
incoming email but execute the attachments. The "fuckwit"
responsible
for that is a billionare not the poor slobs that purchased his crap.
Outlook does not open email attachments automatically. You have to run
them. This means that the same morons running attachments in outlook
would run them in evolution or kmail. The only time you can blame old
billyboy is when there is a coding problem. If you do, then you also
have
to lump equal blame on the people who put buffer overflows in evolution
and kmail (and sendmail, squid, apache, ssh, etc). Those happen just
as
often if not more. (I use Linux exclusively so no lecures, ok?)
But this is rather off topic, so: atheists open attachments too.
someone should say god made the virus to punish the unfaithful and then I
can rip into them about how very wrong they are and use some of my
nastier
ad hominems that I made up this morning. that's on-topic and very very
sporting
ok. I made the viruses to punish you.
me. I. I did it. I created MyDoom.
IT WAS ME OVER HERE!!! HERE IN THE CORNER, LOSING MY RELIGION!!!
now pay me $500 000.
You'll be pleased to know, then, that you have been added to the
USENET Global Killfile, a list of objectionable users whose
articles will automatically be blocked by subscribing sites. At
the present, the list of sites which comply with the USENET Global
Killfile is approximately 82%.
Your messages will continue to be transmitted from site to site
so that the non-GK using sites will still see them, but users on
participating sites will not be troubled with your messages
popping up in their newsgroups.

people who get infected by opening attachments are bozos.
we wouldn't have most of the virus problems we do have, if these bozos were
isolated from technology they don't seem to know the first fucking thing

You could have left out the word "virus" in that sentence and it would be
even more true. But just remember: we're ALL bozos at some point, about
something. It's just Life, as any realistic philosopher could tell you.
i opened the ZIP file. saw test.pif inside. said "yeah right" and binned it.
if i had been feeling particularly brave, i'd have opened the test.pif to
see if my anti-virus program handled it. but I wasn't brave.

back in 2000, i got caught by a pif file. the attachment came from someone i
had just been corresponding with and i thought they had sent me something to
check.
Norton Anti-Virus couldn't help me disinfect my machine. In fact, generally
speaking NAV is a complete waste of anyone's time, money and machine cycles.
One of my web site's community members gave me a recommendation for an
anti-virus package that did the trick. I can't remember the name of it. The
guys making it stopped distributing free updates and for a time I was
unprotected. in 2002 I installed AVG and since then I am no longer infected.

"Particularly brave" which is also known by the rest of us as
"stupid". I just test things by moving them around (AVG will scan on
that action) or simply by left clicking and choosing "Scan with AVG" (I
think all of the major anti-virus programs out there offer a similar
option). To actually intentionally try to open this ***** is just asking
for trouble.
what I did do is straight away check for updates on the AVG. there
was one. there was another one today.
When I checked my copy of MyDoom (well, at least if seemed to fit
the description) by opening the zip file and trying to move the archived
file inside around, AVG complined only because of the double extension
(used to disguise executables as some no executable document filt type,
such as a ".doc" extension --they flag this because it's always a sure
sign of someone being up to no good). When I renamed it to avoid the
double extension warning and scanned the file again, an up to date AVG
failed to see anything wrong with that file. This was done two days ago
(remember that I had just updated that file --had there not been a
double extension, AVG would not have known the difference).
Today I just repeated the test with the same file and the virus
database current to today and it correctly identified it as MyDoom.A
(whether I renamed the file or not).
I'm not writing this to put down AVG. The same thing will happen
with all of the anti-viral programs at one point or
another --particularly if a worm spreads very fast (in fact, I've
already seen something like this, where all infected files weren't
properly identified, happen before using a different program with a
version of the signatures file which was supposed to be able to detect
the particular worm I knew I was examining (IIRC, it was Magistr --as I
got dozens of those) --the next version of the signature file worked for
all suspect files I had). Even with an up to date anti-virus program you
have to not be stupid and practice safe hex.
back in 2000, i got caught by a pif file. the attachment came from
someone i had just been corresponding with and i thought they had
sent me something to check.

Sounds like me. I used InoculateIT Personal Edition and then they
stopped offering the free updates (I'm waiting for this to happen with
AVG --maybe it never will). Before that I used Norton System Works with
Norton Antivirus but it did some funky, annoying things with the MVP3
chipset that was on my motherboard at the time (it made the system
unstable --I think that's just a Norton Utilities characteristic-- and
it screwed with my system time in a major way --one of those problems
the company is aware of but never gets around to fixing) and I stopped
using it as soon as they wanted some money for the subscription to next
year's updates.
