Do fuckwits still open email attachments? Do they? With no anti-virus
program? Do they open a ZIP file which contains test.pif and actually open
that *****?
i got several copies already. it got binned. unopened. obviously.
the real problem here is not the fucking virus. it's the fuckheads who still
open attachments which contain executables.
those people are the real fucking problem. get them off the Internet and the
problem goes away.
shoot them. annihilate. eradicate. nuke. kill. kill. kill.

MyDoom Spawns More Potent Variant
By Michelle Delio | Also by this reporter Page 1 of 1
12:16 PM Jan. 28, 2004 PT
A new, nastier variant of the MyDoom worm has been released and is beginning
to spread across the Internet, according to antivirus experts.
Computers infected with MyDoom.B will launch a 12-day denial-of-service
attack on Microsoft.com beginning Feb. 1. They will also launch a separate
attack on the SCO Group's website on the same date, just as the original
version of the worm is coded to do.
MyDoom.B also alters system files in order to block infected computers from
accessing a list of 65 websites, most of them belonging to antivirus
vendors, in an apparent attempt to stymie users attempting to download
antivirus application updates or information.
The worm's predecessor swept through inboxes earlier this week and was
quickly dubbed the most virulent e-mail worm of all time by e-mail-filtering
company MessageLabs.
Antivirus experts said they believe computers that are infected with
MyDoom.A are probably being used to send out e-mails containing copies of
the new variant. Infected computers have a backdoor in their systems that
allows malicious hackers to remotely access and control infected machines.
"These infected computers may have received a command to send out copies of
MyDoom.B. Therefore, the computer community may be facing a much more
serious outbreak than the one caused by MyDoom.A on Tuesday," said Denis
Zenkin, head of corporate communications for Kaspersky Labs, a Moscow-based
antivirus firm.
The new version of MyDoom's programming code also contains a text string
that is presumably a message from the virus' creator: "sync-1.01; andy; I'm
just doing my job, nothing personal, sorry."
A two-pronged denial-of-service attack on both Microsoft and SCO could
affect more than just the two companies. According to Internet-monitoring
firm Keynote, overall Internet performance speed had dipped to 8 percent to
10 percent slower than normal on Tuesday, when MyDoom.A was at its peak.
Keynote's analysis stated that the slowdown was not a significant change and
would not be detectable by the everyday user. The slowdown may have been
caused by slight traffic increases due to the worm's propagation through
e-mail, downloads of updated virus-detection files for corporate and home
users, and other related Internet traffic.
But when MyDoom, versions A and B, commences its expected 12-day
denial-of-service attacks against Microsoft and SCO on Super Bowl Sunday,
there could be a noticeable impact on overall Internet performance, Keynote
analysts warned. Besides hoping that the majority of infected users purge
their machine of MyDoom, there is little that either Microsoft or SCO can do
to avoid the attacks, which are intended to overwhelm their servers.
Starting Feb. 1, if all goes as the virus writer planned, connection
requests to the front page of both companies' websites will come roughly
every second from each of the estimated thousands of machines that are now
infected.
Antivirus companies Sophos and F-Secure have released free tools to purge
MyDoom.A from infected computers. Tools to clean MyDoom.B from machines will
be released shortly.
MyDoom affects only computers running the Windows operating system. It
arrives as an e-mail attachment with one of seven subject lines, including
"Test," "Hi" or "Mail Transaction Failed." Users who click on the attachment
activate the worm.
When executed, the virus first opens up Windows' Notepad and fills it with
garbage data. The virus then scours the computer for e-mail addresses, and
e-mails itself to a random selection of those addresses.
The virus then looks for the file-sharing application Kazaa on the infected
hard drive. If that application is found, MyDoom will copy itself to the
folder in which Kazaa users store files that they want to share. The virus
disguises itself as various programs that would allow users to activate or
hack various applications, including Microsoft Office.

Did you know that Microsoft Exchange and Outlook when first installed
are configured to automatically open attachments? I believe they also
have preview turned on. Thus they are preconfigured to not only
open incoming email but execute the attachments. The "fuckwit"
responsible for that is a billionare not the poor slobs that purchased

Outlook doesn't come configured to open attachments by default or with
the preview turned on. You should probably have some sort of idea
what the hell you are talking about before you say it.
Outlook XP and Outlook 2003 won't even allow you to access a dangerous
attachment. They strip them out by default. Just try and send
someone running Outlook a .exe file or a .scr file and see if they
even can access it. I've been using Outlook for many years and have
zero problems with it and have had zero virus problems although I've
been sent a lot of viruses. Coupling it with Norton System Works Pro
keeps everything out of my computers.

Outlook doesn't come configured to open attachments by default or with
the preview turned on.
Oh, I have a very good idea what I am talking about.
Every version of Exchange and Outlook I have installed have had the
preview turned on. In fact after turning off preview in my main
folder I have created new folders/accounts and the preview was on in
them. It is very annoying that I have to constantly turn off the
preview.
As to opening attachments automatically there was a security hole that
they discovered back in 2001. It caused attachments with the
incorrect MIME header to be executed automatically. See:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/treeview/default.asp?url=/technet/security/bulletin/MS01-020.asp
The Klez worm took advantage of this. I was running an Anti-virus
program when I recieved an email titled "Run this is DOS mode" from
someone I didn't know. Normally attachments don't open when you mark
items so I thought it was safe to mark for delete. I marked it for
delete. It got opened because of preview and immediately started
running because of the security hole that automatically opens
attachements with bad MIME types. I heard the disk drive start
spinning violently. So I hit the power. To late it had already
destroyed half my .jpg and .doc files. I lost about a months worth
of nature photographs I had taken. I had backups of the best ones
so it wasn't such a terrible loss. But boy was I pissed.
You can read about Klez here:
http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.klez.h@mm.html
So yes indeed Outlook and Exchange were preconfigured to automatically
spread this particular worm.
Microsoft has indeed been extremely negligent in it's behavior. I am
a libertarian and quite pro-business so if you hear me attacking a
business you now they screwed up. It's not like viruses were unknown
before MS created much of the software they have produced full of
virus gateways. WTF were they thinking when they made the procedure
for opening a picture the same as one for running an execuatable
inside an email? The guy that did that should be fired.
So both you and this ignoramous Mel should probably shut their
individual pie holes. It is possible to get stung by malware even if
you are taking reasonable precautions.

I'm no computer slouch. I was not effected by mydoom at all. The
klez virus is not a contemporaneous problem. I had the problem with
that virus long ago. I have multiple systems at home. One being a
3.2 GHz, 2GB RAM, 160GB, disk space machine running XP Professional,
and a rather large LED display. I built the system myself from parts
I ordered on Newegg. I use it for gaming and surfing. I don't
figure a mail system requires much more than the old Windows 98
machine I run it on. I see no reason to spend money where it is not
needed. I use Microsoft Update and an antivirus program on all my
machines. Plus adaware and spybot among other things.
The point of my post is that it is possible to become infected despite
ample precautions. In fact, just today Microsoft announced another
security hole today that makes your system totally vulnerable to
attack. It's in the newer OS's and not in Windows 98. See:
http://www.microsoft.com/security/security_bulletins/20040210_windows.asp
The vulnerability has been there all along. Luckily the good guys
found it first and informed Microsoft (who took forever to fix it).
I would refrain from making too many assumptions about other people
you do not know personally. I found the original post of this thread
appalling.
The only things I'll admit to is being a poor speller and being too
lazy to proofread my posts. Sorry if I gave the impression all
attachments are opened automatically. My memory was fuzzy as to why
the attachment got opened automatically. After all it's been a few
years.

i don't give a ***** what kind of computer you use.
i don't give a ***** that you think yer some kinda genius because you ordered

Oh, I have a very good idea what I am talking about.
Every version of Exchange and Outlook I have installed have had the
preview turned on. In fact after turning off preview in my main
folder I have created new folders/accounts and the preview was on in
them. It is very annoying that I have to constantly turn off the
preview.
Maybe you should upgrade. Outlook 2000, Outlook XP and Outlook 2003
don't come with the preview turned on by default. Did you set up the
software yourself or did the system administrator? I know a little
bit about this stuff.

The problem occured a couple years back. I have upgraded on other
machines. On this machine I just have Windows 98 and Outlook Express.
If I get a virus now I don't have anything on this old clunker that
would matter anyway. I still have anti-virus anyway. I'm just too
cheap to upgrade.
Sorry on re-reading my email I could see where you thought I was
wrong.
