I just got finished watching Dateline, a one hour TV-magazine show in
the U.S. The story was about how historical the bible is with regards
to the birth of Jesus. It was unbelievable. Nothing, not one thing was
questioned. The narrator would say, "Well, Luke says X, but John says
Y, and biblical scholars have decided Z,", then he'd go to the next
so-called point without addressing the issue at all.
Amazingly foolish statements were passed without comment. One of the
"scholars" actually said, "What I would say is if we’re talking about
the story of the birth of Jesus – it’s too improbable not to be true."
The logic of the Christian.
There was a statement that Christianity was the foundation of Western
civilization. Perhaps their knowledge of the west stops with the Dark
Ages, when the church was in control. The western culture I'm familiar
with has its modern foundations in the Renaissance, when people were
busily dismantling the power of the church, and its original foundations
in the legal systems of the Greek and Romans.
The narrator also referred to the birth of Jesus as an "incontestable
fact", so at least there wasn't any pretence of trying to learn the
truth. They just wanted to confirm the "truth" the Christians already
wanted to believe.
They did make a pretence of balancing the various gospel accounts to
figure out what had happened, but amazingly they neglected to address
any of the other religions whose saviors were born in similar
conditions, lived similar lives and died similar deaths. Perhaps trying
to expose the actual underpinnings of Christianity may have been too
risqué.
What a waste of time this thing was.
