Object: NEED ATHEIST BOOK LIST FOR LOCAL LIBRARY
My local county library is woefully lacking on Atheist literature. When I
brought this to the Collection Development head she ask that I submit a list
of books and videos that I would suggest and she would review. One
restriction, these must be recent publications, not old works due to her
resource mandate. If you know of some really good books/videos of recent
vintage let me know.
Thanks,
Khubla

Huh? Resource mandate against old books? Probably mold/mildew issues.
New editions of Ingersoll; Voltaire's Candide, even Mark Twain's The
Mysterious Stranger, and books on mythology (Joseph Campbell, The
Golden Bough by Sir James George Frazer) Joseph Lewis's classic
"Atheist Manifesto" or "Atheism" should be in every library. See if
they are.

Here's the most comprehensive list I've ever seen, posted a few years
ago here on alt.atheism:
http://groups.google.com/group/alt.atheism/search?q=top+300+books&start=
0&
Link is to a list of posts by Dan Fake, an atheist who unfortunately
had other issues, and subsequently left aa in a snit.
His list of 300 books for atheists, agnostics, freethinkers and
humanists, however, is excellent.

Suggest any Martin Gardner books. His writings are not atheist,
and if he is he gives no hint of it, but his books are great for
teaching people how to think logically and critically.
Religious fucknuts might attempt to steal and burn a Stephen Jay
Gould book, but not a Gardner book.
Also, because of the success of the crappy "I, Robot" movie,
some xians at two schools where I worked brought in Asimov's
book thinking it was the same stupid god-crap story.

One
restriction, these must be recent publications, not old works due to her
resource mandate. If you know of some really good books/videos of recent

The reason for the restrictions is probably cost. Books that
are current usually have lower prices than those out of print
or from back catalogues. It's undoubtedly cheaper to order a
number of books and ship them all at once than to acquire them
one at a time.

Mr. Garder is most definitely a theist.

Everything and anything by Prof. Richard Dawkins would be an essential

And Daniel Dennet....
