Object: New $20 bill to atheists: "***** you"
Has anyone noticed that the new $20 bill, in addition to looking
generally hideous, has increased prominence for the "In God We Trust"
quasi-motto? The old twenty featured less dark print against a solid,
medium density background over the White House. The new bill not only
has darker type for the statement of faith, it floats upon illuminated
clouds giving it the air of the divine.

Hey Crazy! How's it going? :-) You've got it backwards - it's the
_government_ who looks stupid for claiming to have freedom of religion
whilst foisting a particular brand of it on the entire American public
against their will. Atheists come out of the deal smelling squeaky
clean. :-)

Actually its atheists who look stupid. You don't see confederate flag
anywhere on government property because its offensive to blacks. Blacks did
change a lot of things by filing class action lawsuits, the same for gays
and other minorities. How come there are no class action lawsuits from 30
million areligious people out there?

They have been filed, but the courts have refused to certify them; the claim is
that there is no "definite harm" to non-theists because of this "ceremonial
deism" (although I find it amusing that religious nuts can reduce their own
fanaticism to something so meaningless.) As a result, the on-going war against
State Religion must be fought one battle at a time.

Could it be said to be a tenet of deism that the Deist God is being
trusted in? I find that sort of commitment to the Deist God to be out
of character.
The god phrase may be ceremonial, but I don't see how it can be
claimed to be ceremonial Deism. It implies relationship with deity
and therefore must be some form of theism.

It's ceremonial deism, not ceremonial Deism. There's a huge
difference.

The only reason I can see to use the word "deism" in any form of
capitalization is to obfuscate the fact that the government is
establishing a ceremonial theistic religion.
I'm sure there is some legal hairsplitter wrangling that has gone on
about this phrase, but dictionary.com does not show any appreciable
difference in the definitions of deism it has. Nor does it show any
bifurcation along the lines of capitalization.
I don't see how the use of "deism" in the phrase "ceremonial deism" to
describe the presence of the phrase "In God We Trust" on money is at
all an accurate use of the word.

"deism", small "d", means theism. With a large "D", it's a particular
religion.

I don't see how the use of "deism" in the phrase "ceremonial deism" to
describe the presence of the phrase "In God We Trust" on money is at
all an accurate use of the word.

Read it as "ceremonial belief in a god". It's still nonsense, but
it's not the religion of most of the founding fathers.

And over the White House, too. How appropriate.

And you are saying there is no God. Do you feel stupid now?

Why would he feel stupid? The fact that the Bureau of Engraving and
Printing churns out all these pieces of paper with a trite phrase
embossed on it, proves nothing about the actual existence of any
supposed god.

But it makes atheists look stupid because they claim there is no god, when
government says it is.

The government said blacks weren't full human beings at one point. Did
that make people who disagreed look stupid?
Or do you just look stupid for asserting things are true merely because
the government says so?

A government agency says it so it MUST be true.
