New $20 bill to atheists: "***** you" |
Has anyone noticed that the new $20 bill, in addition to looking
generally hideous, has increased prominence for the "In God We Trust"
quasi-motto? The old twenty featured less dark print against a solid,
medium density background over the White House. The new bill not only
has darker type for the statement of faith, it floats upon illuminated
clouds giving it the air of the divine.

<Yawn> Jolly ol' England has an official state religion, complete with a
monarch who has officially sanctioned divine right to rule. It is also
becoming a nation of atheists. What we need is the christers to do MORE
silly things that make them appear to be hypocrites!

I think you are confused. We broke away from England to get out from
under King George. You know - being taxed without representation and
all that. (I think you are thinking about the given reason the
Puritans settled in New England (much earlier) - they wanted to have
the freedom to practice their religion. Of course they didn't want
people to have the freedom to practice any *other religion. Just
theirs.) Just because we made ourselves a secular state doesn't mean
that was our whole motivation.

You are aware that the UK does ahve a state religion and that one of
Her Majesty's titles is "Defender of the Faith", right?
Oddly, the faith mentioned is actually Catholicism. The title
predates Henry the VIII's little hissy fit about his divorce.

To be fair, the Amish are not comaprable to the other loonies in
American religion. They have simply chosen to live a life without the
modern conveinences we take for granted out of a belief that it's
better.
Contrary to popular belief, they don't reject technology out of hand.
They choose appropriate technology. For example, the Amish won't have
cars or phones in their homes, but each community does have a pgone
for emergencies, and they will not hesitate to load someone in an
ambulence if necessary.
Interesting people. I've always thought they'd be a great choice to
settle an Earth-like world. I just can't find the plot to hang on the
idea.

Very few people nowadays would be capable settling an earthlike, frontier world.
Very few Westerners posess the temperament, skills or cultural background to make
it work.
So imagine if, in 40 years, the few surviving Amish communities are given an
opportunity to literally leave the modern world behind....

I come from slam dunk in the middle of Amish country, so I know a bit
about the subject. :-) Some of them do eschew technology, and some of
them don't. Even the Amish have their sects. :-/ Some have even
refused to use gray reflecting tape on their horses & buggies, and
thus are effectively banned from driving on public roadways at night.
Others accept the reflecting tape only if it's gray, and some have no
problem with using orange. Some even own cars, but they're more
"radical" than most and are generally considered by most Amish as a
different lifestyle entirely (I think they're called Anabaptists, but
while I know there is a sect by that name, I'm not 100% sure it's the
one I'm thinking of). None of them that I've ever met, however, will
use curtains on their windows, and the most "radical" color I've ever
seen one wearing was medium/light blue. The rest are white or shades
of black or "almost black" blue. There are also "hybrid" religions
between Amish & more modern Christians. The Mennonites of the area
around my childhood home are one - their women tend to wear long
dresses & the head coverings & such, but they'll have cars, phones and
whatnot. Some have televisions, though most all agree that television
is by and large an evil thing. Some consider roller skating to be a
sin because it's so close to dancing, and some view movie theaters as
the Devil's playground, even innocent "G" rated movies. Some won't
own a deck of cards because of their association with gambling, and
yet others will actively and deliberately gamble without a second
thought.
It's quite an amazing mish-mash of people you run into in that kind of
area. :-) I think the "mish-mash" effect has become more prevalent
these days because quite frankly, they can't avoid running into
"worldly" people any more. At one time, they could. Now, they can't,
and some of the various influences are cross-pollinating.
They choose appropriate technology. For example, the Amish won't have
cars or phones in their homes, but each community does have a pgone
for emergencies, and they will not hesitate to load someone in an
ambulence if necessary.
I've known exceptions to this, but they're not common. By and large,
your description seems to be an accurate depiction of your average
Amish community.
Interesting people. I've always thought they'd be a great choice to
settle an Earth-like world. I just can't find the plot to hang on the
idea.
It's already been done, I believe, with the "Naderite" concept from
"The Way" series of books.

The baptists and other fundies are even loonier. They seriously believe
that the world was magiced into existance 4000 ago, that adam'n'eve were
real, that the flood happened and ever other bit of mythology in the bible

generally hideous, has increased prominence for the "In God We Trust"
quasi-motto? The old twenty featured less dark print against a solid,

has darker type for the statement of faith, it floats upon illuminated

So if theism is fiction, what is atheism? Afiction?
"Fiction" is defined by Merriam-Webster (http://www.m-w.com) as:
1a: something invented by the imagination or feigned; specifically an invented story
b: literature (as novels or short stories)
c: a work of fiction
2a: an assumption of a possibility as a fact irrespective of the question of its truth <a legal fiction>
b: a useful illusion or pretense
3: the action of feigning or of creating with the imagination.
In other words, Yes: afiction (ie without something invented by the imagination) would be a good synonym
for atheism.
