Object: New Billboard
I noticed a new billboard this afternoon on my way home from work, in the
city I call home. It says "So who says nobody ever did anything for
you" and depicts a hand with a spike pounded through the palm. Below the
whole mess is a line that says "Read the Bible - John 3:16"
Holy jumping jesus, can you believe it? Obvoiusly the billboard is
privately owned and will sell advertizing space to the highest bidder.
Isn't private enterprise wonderful?
I filed a complaint with the city via their website and requested
feedback. Then I wrote a letter to the city newspaper, text below.
-----
This afternoon I pulled up to a stoplight at <address snipped> and was
greeted by a very distasteful billboard. It proclaims "So who says
nobody ever did anything for you?" (or something similar) and shows a
picture of a hand with a spike grotesquely pounded through it. At the
bottom the sign reads "Read The Bible - John 3:16". I was apalled.
The <city snipped> is home to a very large number of Christians who would
also find distaste in such a display, but let us not forget the
minorities. Jews, Muslims, Hindi and Atheists also make their home in
this fine city, and this select brew of Christians who find it necessary
to push their beliefs on others seems to have made a statement that we
need to change to their way of thinking. This is the exact reason why
the fathers of our country, who were of diverse beliefs themselves, wrote
Separation of Church and State into the law of the land, the
Constitution.
Religion belongs in the home, and in the Church. That way we can all get
along without the kind of hatred that billboards like the one mentioned
above stir up. If an Atheist or a Jew stood on a street corner holding
signs advertizing the Jewish faith, or no faith at all, what would you
think? And in what way are billboards like this one any different?

I think you're barking up the wrong tree and whoever you sent the letter to
will think you're just a crank. Congress shall make no law respecting the
establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or
abridging the freedom of speech. If you want to advertise christianity,
judaism, hinduism, islam, or atheism, go for it. It is your right as long as
you have the money to do it.

One has the right _TO TRY TO_ advertise, but not the right to succeed.
Short of buying the billboard company, the newspaper, or whatever, the
odds of an atheist ad being published (or staying published) are very
low.
The same applies to a whole range of other topics too.
Mainstream media will seldom, if ever, publish any ad they think their
mainstream audiences don't want to see -- or any ad the publisher
doesn't want them to see.

Huh? So, because people CHOOSE not to run, that somehow equates to you
not being given the vote? If you want to run for the Presidency, then
you can. Your atheism will not be a legal bar.

Well, I have an opinion too. I don't have parishioners making donations
to me, so I can't counter it in the same way. And I don't have the lack
of morality it takes to trash it either. We'll see what the response is
(if any). But at least I've voiced my opinion, and I feel good about
that.
I expect to see religious signs and announcements in front of churches
and other religious establishments. Some of the signs in front of
churches are kind of funny. The occasional "God Bless America" bumper
sticker makes me groan, and I counter that with my own vehicular slogans.
But these idiots that think everyone else is wrong, and we must be shown
the error of our ways - I don't know, it's damn insulting to me. This is
why I publically ridicule the street corner preachers we get from time to
time, and it's why I'm trying to make an example of this latest
infestation of social backwash.

I've complained to the city about an eyesore, and I wrote a letter to the

stupid, then I would have agreed with him. But, he went further than
that. That is why I insulted him.

You're supporting a Christian's right to get in your face with their
religion? You're no atheist.

Atheist: One who lacks belief in a deity.
Ohh yep! I am an atheist.
And yes, I support the right of all sorts of people to "get in my
face". How does that go..
"I disagree with what you say, but I will defend to the death your
right to say it".

You're pathetic.

Says someone who wants to stifle points of view he disagrees with.

I've complained to the city about an eyesore, and I wrote a letter to the
editor of the local paper about it. Religious people complain daily
about advertizements containing scantily clad babes, ads for booze within
view of their children, they are even successful at censoring TV shows
and movies, and are on their way to be the ones who decide what YOU will
watch.

Yes, and when they do that, or boast about doing that, then I tell them
that they are wrong as well. And I will tell you that you are wrong as
well. I want to live in a society where we are free to have and express
all sorts of opinions (short of incitement and/or conspiracy to cause
actual harm of course).

So don't give me this "preventing other people from expressing
their opinion" *****.

But that is what you are doing.

I'm fighting fire with fire, *****.

Ohh a truly cunning plan..

Holy crap. You actually wrote a letter of complaint because someone

the sort of person the fundies whine about when they claim that

Way to go.

Holey shite! So you counter what you consider to be a whine with
your own whine.
Way to go.

Did I make any attempt to have his speech removed from public view?
No. Did I complain to the authorities asking for it to be removed? No.
Did I suggest that he should not have the right to speak as he did?
No.

What I did was call him an idiot for doing it. And so, there is
hypocrisy involved.

The sign insinuates that people of other (or no) faith are wrong. The
hand with the spike through it is there to throw feelings of guilt toward
those who do not support the faith. It angers me. I stood up for my
beliefs, and if that angers you, too fucking bad you whiny-***** little
***** ant. If I bought ad time on a billboard and slammed the Christian
religion at the very least I would have my billboard trashed. At the
very worst I'd have a lynch mob burning crosses on my lawn. So there ya
have it, Einstein. It's city-supported opression. Back of the bus,
*****.
So how was church, O brainless one?

Nothing wrong with people saying you are wrong. Sorry, but sometimes
people will disagree with you. That is life. When you try to prevent
people disagreeing with you in public it just makes you look silly.

The
hand with the spike through it is there to throw feelings of guilt toward
those who do not support the faith.

Why would anyone who doesnt believe in Jesus as teh son of God feel
guilt about his crucifixion? Surely he was just another guy who got
killed by the Romans, I dont feel guilty about Spartacus' death, why
would I feel guilt about Jesus' death.

It angers me. I stood up for my
beliefs,

You stood up for your beliefs by trying to prevent other people
expressing their beliefs with their own money, in a way they choose.

and if that angers you, too fucking bad you whiny-***** little
***** ant. If I bought ad time on a billboard and slammed the Christian
religion at the very least I would have my billboard trashed.

Who slammed you or anything you believe in? They simply stated what
they believe. And I have seen billboards that advocate Islam and
Scientology. They are as "slamming" as the one you described, and I
havent seen any damage to them.

At the
very worst I'd have a lynch mob burning crosses on my lawn.
So there ya
have it, Einstein. It's city-supported opression.

City supported? The city owned the billboard? The city paid for the
advert?

Back of the bus,
*****.

Now that is kinda stupid. The Rosa Parks incident was a catalyst for
the civil rights movement that emancipated black people. At the time,
as long as not being allowed tos sit where they liked, blacks were also
prevented in many cases from voting, they were denied the right to the
education of their choosing and so forth. You have not been denied ANY
rights due to your atheism. This was discussed in a previous thread on
this group.

So how was church, O brainless one?

Haven't been for years. I am an atheist.

Sorry Unie Vic, but the first amendment doers seem to allow these
billboards, where billboards are allowed.
You might just as well complain about fundies posting to alt.atheism.
Is anyone else concerned that *some* Christians use such graphic
violence to illustrate their points. Gibson's snuff film "The
Passion", this billboard, for goodness sakes Christians wear a death
instrument as their sign of faith.
Such is life in the 21st century(CE)..

Personally, I think a better response would be to raise some money and get
your own billboard. Might I suggest a profile of Thomas Jefferson with an
excerpt from his letter to the Danbury Baptist Association: " I contemplate
with sovereign reverence that act of the whole American people which declared
that their legislature should make no law respecting an establishment of
religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof, thus building a wall of
separation between church and state." It could be part of a series, showing
Founding Fathers with their own statements about the value of a secular
society.
