New to the group. What are your Fav books? |
Hi all,
I've been a long time atheist, but have only recently decided to back up my
view point. Just wondering if you guys could help jump start my research by
listing a few of your favorite books. I really want to focus on fact based
information. Contradictions in the bible, historical inaccuracies, etc.
Thanks guys!

Another vote for "The Bible Unearthed" by Silberman/Finklestine. The
Patriarchs? Nope. The Exodus? Nah. Jealous smaller nation (Judea)
outraged that it's wealthier neighbor (Israel) had a more cosmopolitan
attitude? Bingo!

For the New Testament, I like Burton Mack's "Who Wrote the New
Testament". Although he seems to believe (and actually presupposes it
in the book) there was a historical Jesus (I personally don't), it's
not a bad explanation of how the legend of the gentle Rabbi became the
Son Of God (tm).
http://tinyurl.com/yf72vc
On the subject of the possibility a historical Jesus never existed, I'd
start with Earl Doherty's website and the books he references. Although
the evidence is out there, the god-man has been such a presence in
Western thought for so long that people think we're revisionists for
just mentioning the possibility.

My apparently newly ex-christian ex-wife a few years ago got me Randi's
_An Encyclopedia of Claims, Frauds, and Hoaxes of the Occult and
Supernatural_ that's pretty good. There's now an on-line version at

The "Atheist Manifesto: The Case Against Christianity, Judaism, and
Islam", by French author Michel Onfray. Available Jan 10, 2007.
http://tinyurl.com/vp822
(It goes to Amazon UK)
I've read the original, and it's very good, and it has a different
approach than The God Delusion, which I'm currently reading. The
"Atheist Manifesto..." is more biting and reads like a pamphlet, but
it's also very erudite (the author is a philosopher). Highly
recommended.

Oh, I see, those kind of books. I was about to say, "anything with the
name H. P. Lovecraft on the spine.", but that's not what you're looking
for is it? ;-)
"Film-Flam" by James Randi. A bit old, but still very good.
"The Faith Healers" by James Randi
"The Bible Unearthed" Very good book
"The History of the Bible" By Issac Asimov
Of course, nothing causes more atheism in the world then the source
document itself. I'd suggest:
http://skepticsannotatedbible.com/
Great place to start.

Hi Bob!
I'd recommend the already mentioned "The God Delusion" by Dawkins, "The
End of Faith" by Sam Harris, and another favorite of mine is "The Demon
Haunted World", by Carl Sagan.

Noticed the "God Delusion" mentioned more than a few times. Started reading
it a few weeks ago. That was what inspired me to search out this group.
Thanks again for all the help.

Hello and welcome to the zoo. Your viewpoint is your own and doesn't
require defending. After all, it pertains only to you.
As for the utilization of reason, that's a waste of time since
Christianity isn't reason based. It's emotionally based on fear/terror.
Those high levels have the tendency to 'lock out' any cognitive
functions.
If you really want to focus on fact based information you don't need
resources. Don't metaphorically put the cart before the horse.
Focusing on the rubbish 'definition' for the g-o-d letter string and the
myraid begged questions, broken logic, and furious handwaving is all
that's necessary.

A very good introduction to critical thinking is Carl Sagan's "The
Demon-Haunted World: Science as a Candle in the Dark", which doesn't
directly address the Bible, but offers valuable tools for doing so.
Also, please bear in mind that the Bible is just a collection of
seventy out of the many thousands of religious texts produced by
humans throughout our history; there's really no point in specifically
refuting any individual one of the lot any more than one needs to
refute goblins or unicorns, indeed, bothering to refute them gives
them a dignity that they don't actually merit. But if you really are
interested in doing so, www.skepticsannotatedbible.com is a good
starting point.

The best choice for finding stupid stuff in the bible is ... the bible. I
have never bought any "atheist books." Why would I need to with the bible
being such a perfect weapon against the bible?

One fine day in alt.atheism, Bob <boblynn@sprynet.com> bloodied us up
with this:
Hi all,

Thank GAWWD. A few posters of late have claimed long time atheism only
to follow it with a claim of the discovery of "god".
Just wondering if you guys could help jump start my

Or pick up a copy of "The God Delusion" by Richard Dawkins. I'm in
