Practical applications of alternative physics? |
I know, I know - I'm really not so well-versed on physics that I can address the
issue with any sort of significant intelligence. Though for an uneducated
layperson, I think my understanding of physics is at least a -tad- bit better
than most uneducated people. Not sure if that's a good thing or not...
erm... I digress. While I know I still lack the foundations from which I could
build a more complete understanding of the subject matter, and thus am most
certainly unlikely to be able to appreciate or understand -all- that I might
read on such a subject, I am nonetheless interested in finding material which
explores the modelling of alternative physics - especially if knowledge gleaned
from such modelling might possibly have its uses in our own physics-based
reality.
Material speculating upon the potential interactions between different types of
physics-based systems would be -extremely- in keeping with my line of interest.
Any pointers in this direction - or in other directions you feel might be in
some way related - will be greatly appreciated. Thanks! :-)

Well, we know in a pretty specific sense what some of the parameters of physics
are in our universe. I hear them speculating all the time on what would happen
if the electron were a little smaller or if gravity were a little stronger,
etc... etc... etc...
So I'm interested in "alternate physics" - that is speculation about systems of
physics as it would be with some of the variables we know about being altered in
some way. Many "slight variations" on our own variables would produce an
uninhabitable universe or a universe that comes into and winks out of existence
very quickly (or at least much too quickly for life to form). But I'm sure our
setup isn't the -only- set of physics parameters capable of stable existence.
And I'm quite sure someone other than myself has thought of this, and that some
of those who have thought of this are likely to actually be intelligent enough
to produce intelligent speculation on the matter.
Naturally speculation is all it can be, but I'd rather hear intelligent
speculation than the oft-misguided meanderings my -own- mind can make. :-)

You might want to get an Encyclopedia Britannica CD disc for about $25 . It
has all sorts of info on your subjects and numerous others. Most of the data
is in relatively understandable language.
At $25 its a real bargain on tons of information on almost any subject.
