Death toll rises to 1,424 in Indonesia's earthquake
http://english.people.com.cn/200605/27/eng20060527_269102.html
"The death toll has reached 1,424 in Saturday morning's powerful
earthquake in Yogyakarta province and parts of Central Java,
Indonesia, local police said.
"According to data registered by Yogyakarta police, there were 1,240
people killed in Bantul, south of Yogyakarta and one of the most
serious area. Besides, there were 101 people killed in Poltabes area,
55 people killed in Polres Sleman, and 21 people in Polres
Gunungkidul," a police spokesman Bambang Sampurna Jati was quoted by
Antara news agency as saying.
Sampurna said, at the movement the police is imposing Yogyakarta as
warning status I and calling on the society to help each other to
overcome the disaster.
Yogyakarta, Indonesia's ancient royal capital and one of its biggest
cities, is about 440 km south-east of the capital, Jakarta.
The death toll rose steadily as hospitals around Yogyakarta reported a
growing number of fatalities.
Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has instructed Health
Minister Siti Fadillah Supari and Social Affairs Minister Bakhtiar
Chamsyah to go to Yogyakarta immediately to deliver relief aid and
coordinate help for victims of earthquake which hit the city and its
environs on Saturday morning.
"The President is deeply concerned and asked Yogyakarta Governor
Hamengkubuwono X to continuously report on quake's victims and damages
to the Head of State," a presidential spokesman Andi Malarangeng told
the press at the presidential office on Saturday.
Andi said that the President also ordered Indonesian Military ( TNI)
chief Air Marshal Djoko Suyanto to send soldiers to the quake- hit
cities to help evacuate victims.
President Yudhoyono asked residents of Yogyakarta to remain calm amid
rumors on tsunami following the quake measuring 5.9 on the Richter
scale.
The quake's epicenter was located at 8.826 degrees south latitude and
110.23 degrees east longitude, at the depth of 33 kilometers below the
sea level, about 37.6 kilometers of south of Yogyakarta.
Telecommunication network and electricity supply in Yogyakarta were
cut off due to the earthquake, which could be felt at the fifth level
of Modified Marcelli Intensity (MMI).
All flights to and from Adi Sucipto Airport in Yogyakarta were
suspended following damage to the airport's facilities, Antara
reported from Yogyajakarta.

I went to SF on January 16, 1994 for a Usenix conference. That afternoon
I met up with a woman with whom I had been corresponding. I'll draw a
curtain over the events of the evening, suffice it to say that condoms and
I don't get along well and leave it at that.
The earthquake was at around 4:30 or so the next morning. I found out
about it by an acquaintance (who we had run into in the lobby the night
before on the way to buy said condoms) calling me to ask if I was watching
CNN. I turned it on and woke up.
It was at that moment that I realized that while the earth may not have
moved for me in San Francisco that night, it quite emphatically did do so
in Los Angeles.
(And on a completely related note, January 17 happens to be my birthday.
So I got laid and an earthquake for my birthday that year. Heh. Went on
and married the woman later, but that's another long, sad, sordid story.)
I can think of a couple of remarks to be made here but every time I try to
type one, my keyboard slaps me...
Of course! It's a fresh keyboard....

I did manage to miss the Northridge quake, as I was in SF for a
conference. I had to deal with the aftermath, though. I was dating a
woman in Davis and driving up through the Grapevine, right through some of
the worst of it. Made driving that bit a real pain.
I managed to move in time to miss Northridge and the riots. Unfortunately,
my luck in just happening to miss disasters ran out August last year.
But
wasn't Whittier-Narrows your first? I'll never forget that damn thing.
Mostly because of the idiot kids at the Jr. High across the street
screaming at the top of their lungs. Between them and the banging sound,
I jumped out of bed and--as you can't walk in the damn things and I was
still half asleep--ran right into the door jamb.
And then there were the car alarms.
But the best part was the guy on the news ducking under his desk in the
aftershock then peeking out after it was over with those wide eyes. <g>
Ah, yes, I remember that, too. The Channel 5 guy, I think. I didn't
blame him, either.
But it was still funny. <g>
That's nothing. Remember Memphis? Somebody better, it's going to vanish
from the face of the planet someday. I saw a shake map for a quake on
the New Madrid comparable to Northridge. The ground in LA is so broken
up by frequent quakes, the waves are dampened. But that's not true in
the Missouri area. The shaking Northridge and their immediate
surroundings experienced would span parts of *seven *states on the New
Madrid.
And you hardly ever hear a word about that fault. Even though its
produced 7+ quakes as recently as the 19th century.
Thought it was an 8 or so, although they may have recalibrated it based on
new information. Rang church bells in Boston but at the time there were
few Europeans in the center of the continent so it went largely
unchronicled there. For a good fictional account of a New Madrid quake
check out _The Rift_ by Walter Jon Williams. Yep, Memphis gets it.
I see varying numbers on the big one on New Madrid. But it was before seismographs so
nobody can pin it exactly. The USGS materials talk about about 7s mostly
with the biggest being about 7.9 or 8.0. And it was three (some claim four
or even five).
I think technically speaking that's "OH *****!" on the Richter scale.
I almost ordered the Williams book last week. But decided to wait until
after the move.
(The closer hurricane season gets, the more frantically I pack)
