News: Allah slaughters 1500 faithful in Indonesia. Prayers not effective once again. |
Death toll rises to 1,424 in Indonesia's earthquake
http://english.people.com.cn/200605/27/eng20060527_269102.html
"The death toll has reached 1,424 in Saturday morning's powerful
earthquake in Yogyakarta province and parts of Central Java,
Indonesia, local police said.
"According to data registered by Yogyakarta police, there were 1,240
people killed in Bantul, south of Yogyakarta and one of the most
serious area. Besides, there were 101 people killed in Poltabes area,
55 people killed in Polres Sleman, and 21 people in Polres
Gunungkidul," a police spokesman Bambang Sampurna Jati was quoted by
Antara news agency as saying.
Sampurna said, at the movement the police is imposing Yogyakarta as
warning status I and calling on the society to help each other to
overcome the disaster.
Yogyakarta, Indonesia's ancient royal capital and one of its biggest
cities, is about 440 km south-east of the capital, Jakarta.
The death toll rose steadily as hospitals around Yogyakarta reported a
growing number of fatalities.
Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has instructed Health
Minister Siti Fadillah Supari and Social Affairs Minister Bakhtiar
Chamsyah to go to Yogyakarta immediately to deliver relief aid and
coordinate help for victims of earthquake which hit the city and its
environs on Saturday morning.
"The President is deeply concerned and asked Yogyakarta Governor
Hamengkubuwono X to continuously report on quake's victims and damages
to the Head of State," a presidential spokesman Andi Malarangeng told
the press at the presidential office on Saturday.
Andi said that the President also ordered Indonesian Military ( TNI)
chief Air Marshal Djoko Suyanto to send soldiers to the quake- hit
cities to help evacuate victims.
President Yudhoyono asked residents of Yogyakarta to remain calm amid
rumors on tsunami following the quake measuring 5.9 on the Richter
scale.
The quake's epicenter was located at 8.826 degrees south latitude and
110.23 degrees east longitude, at the depth of 33 kilometers below the
sea level, about 37.6 kilometers of south of Yogyakarta.
Telecommunication network and electricity supply in Yogyakarta were
cut off due to the earthquake, which could be felt at the fifth level
of Modified Marcelli Intensity (MMI).
All flights to and from Adi Sucipto Airport in Yogyakarta were
suspended following damage to the airport's facilities, Antara
reported from Yogyajakarta.

Well, by the map they are basically the "edge" of the Eurasian plate where
it meets the Australian plate.

And if I recall my geology with any degree of accuracy, Indonesia exists
because of being--more or less and very colloquially--"scraped up" by the
plate movement.
Yeah, here's something...

The Australian plate is subducting and, I did not know this at all,
Australia is apparently headed our way.
Anyway. Doesn't look like a good place to have a dense population but no
earthquake codes...

I'd often heard the reason traditional Japanese construction is so
light was so the collapsing building wouldn't kill the occupants during
an earthquake. I quess we saw what happened when that hypothesis was
tested in Kobe (although in fairness, most of the older places were
surrounded by newer concrete structures).

It's that "fine tuned for life" thing. The Earth is so perfectly suited
for life that it's trying to kill us all about every other week.
The Australian plate is subducting and, I did not know this at all,
Australia is apparently headed our way.
Anyway. Doesn't look like a good place to have a dense population but no

My understanding, such as it is, about Kobe is that they ignored their own
history and convinced themselves that earthquakes were Tokyo's problem.
Which is really ***** backwards in that places where earthquakes are
frequent are more likely to be ready for them. If nothing else, iffy
structures are going to be knocked down *for you.
Similarly, people here think earthquakes are a California problem. Truth
is, the New Madrid fault is one of--if not THE--biggest threats to the US.
And that's in part because St. Louis, Memphis, et al, aren't used to
quakes and aren't ready for one.
But they're going to get one. And when it happens, it'll be far, far worse
than anything California is even capable of having. I understand even a 6
to 6.5ish quake on the New Madrid is going to give New Orleans a wild
ride. Maybe even cause some damage (wouldn't that be just peachy after
everything we've seen lately?).
And the fault is capable of some nasty big quakes. As I recall, in the
19th century when it went off last time, it produced multiple 7+ quakes.
Caused bells to ring in D.C. from the shaking...

I recall reading accounts of people in the area who claimed that the

everywhere. I believe that the same is true for Memphis, and I don't
know about NO. If a big one hits it will be catastrophic.

How it would be down here depends on how big it is. The shake map I saw
for a mid-6 would give us a fun ride (and make one of the few who had a
clue what was happening) but I wouldn't expect serious damage.
Get up into the mid-7s and beyond, I wouldn't know. Don't want to know
either. Katrina/Rita was enough. I'm outta here...

Similarly, people here think earthquakes are a California problem. Truth
is, the New Madrid fault is one of--if not THE--biggest threats to the
US. And that's in part because St. Louis, Memphis, et al, aren't used to
quakes and aren't ready for one.
But they're going to get one. And when it happens, it'll be far, far
worse than anything California is even capable of having. I understand
even a 6 to 6.5ish quake on the New Madrid is going to give New Orleans
a wild ride. Maybe even cause some damage (wouldn't that be just peachy
after everything we've seen lately?).
Wait until the volcano growing under you erupts.

WHAT? WHERE???
Don't worry, dear. Lucky just has gas again ;)

I know dog farts can be awful. Probably due to their high protein diet.

I'd often heard the reason traditional Japanese construction is so

during an earthquake. I quess we saw what happened when that

My understanding, such as it is, about Kobe is that they ignored

It's that "fine tuned for life" thing. The Earth is so perfectly
suited for life that it's trying to kill us all about every other
week.
The Australian plate is subducting and, I did not know this at
all, Australia is apparently headed our way.
Anyway. Doesn't look like a good place to have a dense
population but no earthquake codes...
I'd often heard the reason traditional Japanese construction is
so light was so the collapsing building wouldn't kill the
occupants during an earthquake. I quess we saw what happened
when that hypothesis was tested in Kobe (although in fairness,
most of the older places were surrounded by newer concrete
structures).
My understanding, such as it is, about Kobe is that they ignored
their own history and convinced themselves that earthquakes were
Tokyo's problem. Which is really ***** backwards in that places
where earthquakes are frequent are more likely to be ready for
them. If nothing else, iffy structures are going to be knocked
down *for you.
Similarly, people here think earthquakes are a California
problem. Truth is, the New Madrid fault is one of--if not
THE--biggest threats to the US. And that's in part because St.
Louis, Memphis, et al, aren't used to quakes and aren't ready for
one.
But they're going to get one. And when it happens, it'll be far,
far worse than anything California is even capable of having. I
understand even a 6 to 6.5ish quake on the New Madrid is going to
give New Orleans a wild ride. Maybe even cause some damage
(wouldn't that be just peachy after everything we've seen
lately?).
Wait until the volcano growing under you erupts.
